This issue of the Biomedical Journal acquaints us with the compelling hypothesis that the vascular glycocalyx lies at the intersection of severe COVID-19 risk factors and damages, and the ways used by artificial intelligence to predict interactions between SARS-CoV-2 and human proteins. Furthermore, we explore the antiviral potential of valinomycin and the long list of COVID-19-related clinical trials, and learn how (not) to fix a broken femoral head. Last but not least, we get to enjoy the tale of the cellular oxygen-sensing system as well as the role of the host complement system during Leptospira infection, and learn that SARS-CoV-2 can sometimes come with a pathogenic plus one.

This study employed a cold plasma-assisted deamidation and glycosylation (CPDG) approach to promote hydrophilic reassembly of zein, resulting in the formation of sugar derivative-zein conjugates. Objective: To investigate the association of timing of commencing glucose management with glycemia, glycemic variability, and pregnancy outcomes among women with early gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM).
Research Design And Methods: In this substudy among participants of a trial of immediate vs. delayed treatment of early GDM diagnosed by 2013 World Health Organization criteria, all women treated immediately and those with delayed diagnosis at 24-28 weeks' gestation (treated as if late GDM) were instructed to monitor capillary blood glucose (BG) four times a day (fasting and 2-h postprandial) until delivery.

For the first time, a novel simple label-free electrochemical immunosensor was fabricated for sensitive detection of the coat protein of beet necrotic yellow vein virus (CP-BNYVV) as the causal agent of Rhizomania disease in sugar beet. To boost the amplification of the electrochemical signal, gold nanoparticles-reduced graphene oxide (AuNPs-rGO) nanocomposite was employed to modify the glassy carbon electrode. Anti-BNYVV polyclonal was immobilized onto a modified electrode by applying a thiol linker via a self-assembly monolayer (SAM) and activating the functionalized surface using (3-aminopropyl triethoxysilane) and glutaraldehyde.

Introduction: Beet necrotic yellow vein virus (BNYVV) is a common viral pathogen that causes considerable economic loss globally. In the present study, a commercial realtime PCR test system and custom loop mediated amplification primers were used to detect the virus in asymptomatic sugar beet samples.
Methods: A total of 107 of 124 samples tested positive for the presence of the A type BNYVV coat protein gene.

Blood is an important component for maintaining animal lives and synthesizing sugars, lipids, and proteins in organs. Revealing the relationship between genes and metabolite expression and milk somatic cell count (SCC), milk fat percentage, milk protein percentage, and lactose percentage in blood is helpful for understanding the molecular regulation mechanism of milk formation. Therefore, we separated the buffy coat and plasma from the blood of Xinjiang Brown cattle (XJBC) and Chinese Simmental cattle (CSC), which exhibit high and low SCC/milk fat percentage/milk protein percentage/lactose percentages, respectively.
