The pure Soqotri resin of Balf.f. (Dracaenaceae) has no volatile smell due to its low content of volatile constituents. Although it is insoluble in -Hexane, we found that the resin, when suspended in -Hexane within five days at 5 °C, led to the extraction of a small portion of a single volatile liquid constituent, which was identified by GC-MS as sesquiterpene β-caryophyllene. This method of extracting the volatile constituents using hexane under cooling is very suitable for resins of the species because these resins usually contain very few volatile terpenes and/or non-terpenes, and they may contain only one volatile terpene per resin as this study result. β-Caryophyllene was identified and separated for the first time from the Soqotri standard resin of . Therefore, β-caryophyllene, as a new chemical property, can support to evaluate the purity of the Soqotri resin. Moreover, a big mass of resin can yield concentrated β-caryophyllene as a liquid extract for further pharmaceutical and nutraceutical applications.

Volatile organic compounds (VOCs) are associated with obesity health risks, while the association of mixed VOCs with visceral adiposity indicators remains unclear. In this study, a total of 2015 adults from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) were included. Weighted generalized linear models, restricted cubic spline (RCS), weighted quantile sum (WQS), and Bayesian kernel machine regression (BKMR) were adopted to assess the association of VOC metabolites (mVOCs) with the visceral adiposity index (VAI) and lipid accumulation product (LAP).

Electronic nose (e-nose) systems are well known in breath analysis because they combine breath printing with advanced and intelligent machine learning (ML) algorithms. This work demonstrates development of an e-nose system comprising gas sensors exposed to six different volatile organic compounds (VOCs). The change in the voltage of the sensors was recorded and analyzed through ML algorithms to achieve selectivity and predict the VOCs.

Mixed fermentation can enhance the flavor and aroma of fruit wine, but the mechanisms driving this enhancement remain unclear. This study used non-targeted metabolomics to analyze the effects of mixed versus single fermentation on plum wine flavor. The results showed that compared with single fermentation, mixed fermentation reduced ethanol content and the ability to consume reducing sugars.

January 2025

Chinese Academy of Inspection and Quarantine, Beijing 100176, China.

Developing ambient ionization methods for direct mass spectrometry (MS) analysis is crucial for achieving sample-to-answer capabilities, especially for rapid analysis and monitoring in specific scenarios. Herein, a compact device is presented that utilizes mesh-collision microtube plasma (MC-μTP) ionization for direct online MS analysis. This device features a self-aspirating design that enables the direct analysis of various sample types.

Background: Previous UK studies found that only 50-67% of patients are aware that anaesthetists are qualified doctors, and public knowledge of anaesthetists' roles was poor. This study aimed to assess patients' knowledge of anaesthetists and anaesthesia, to identify if there has been any improvement over the past two decades. A secondary aim was to determine if exposure to anaesthetists during day case surgery improved patient knowledge.
