Acute-on-chronic liver failure (ACLF) is characterized by acute decompensation of chronic liver disease associated with organ failures. Anemia of diverse etiology is common in patients with ACLF. Spur cell anemia (SCA) is a form of acquired hemolytic anemia that occurs rarely in such patients due to dysregulated lipids metabolism. Spur cells are large erythrocytes with spike-like projections, which predispose them for sequestration and destruction in splenic canaliculi. There is a paucity of data on SCA in patients with ACLF. Here we report a series of five ACLF patients who had severe (hemoglobin level < 8 g/dL) and transfusion-refractory SCA with aggressive clinical course and high mortality rate.

Exiting a germinal zone (GZ) initiates a cascade of events that promote neuronal maturation and circuit assembly. Developing neurons and their progenitors must interpret various niche signals-such as morphogens, guidance molecules, extracellular matrix components, and adhesive cues-to navigate this region. How differentiating neurons in mouse brains integrate and adapt to multiple cell-extrinsic niche cues with their cell-intrinsic machinery in exiting a GZ is unknown.

Rechargeable batteries employing Li metal anodes have gained increasing attention due to their high energy density. Nevertheless, low stability and reversibility of Li metal anodes severely impeded their practical applications. Designing current collectors (CCs) with reasonable structure and composition is an efficient approach to stabilizing the Li metal anodes.

Silicon (Si) is currently the most mature and reliable semiconductor material in the industry, playing a pivotal role in the development of modern microelectronics, renewable energy, and bio-electronic technologies. In recent years, widespread research attention has been devoted to the development of advanced flexible electronics, photovoltaics, and bio-interfaced sensors/detectors, boosting their emerging applications in distributed energy sources, healthcare, environmental monitoring, and brain-computer interfaces (BCIs). Despite the rigid and brittle nature of Si, a series of new fabrication technologies and integration strategies have been developed to enable a wide range of c-Si-based high-performance flexible photovoltaics and electronics, which were previously only achievable with intrinsically soft organic and polymer semiconductors.

Broad-complex, tramtrack, and bric-à-brac domain (BTB) and CNC homolog 1 (BACH1) is a key regulator of the cellular oxidative stress response and an oncogene that undergoes tight post-translational control by two distinct F-box ubiquitin ligases, SCF and SCF. However, how both ligases recognize BACH1 under oxidative stress is unclear. In our study, we elucidate the mechanism by which FBXO22 recognizes a quaternary degron in a domain-swapped β-sheet of the BACH1 BTB dimer.
