The fringe skeleton method is the most straightforward method to estimate phase terms in electronic speckle pattern interferometry (ESPI). It usually needs to binarize the fringe patterns. However, the massive inherent speckle noise and intensity inhomogeneity in ESPI fringe patterns make it difficult to binarize the ESPI fringe patterns. In this paper, we propose a binarization method for ESPI fringe patterns based on a modified M-net convolutional neural network. Our method regards the binarization of fringe patterns as a segmentation problem. The M-net is an excellent network for segmentation and has proven to be a useful tool for skeleton extraction in our previous work. Here we further modify the structure of the previous network a bit to suit our task. We train the network by pairs of ESPI fringe patterns and corresponding binary images. After training, we test our method on 20 computer-simulated and three groups of experimentally obtained ESPI fringe patterns. The results show that even for fringe patterns with high noise and intensity inhomogeneity, our method can obtain good binarization results without image preprocessing. We also compare the modified M-net with a classic segmentation network, the U-net, and a residual encoder-decoder network (RED-net). The RED-net was used for binarization of document images. The experimental results prove the effectiveness of our method.

Turcz. is a winter annual species of the Asteraceae family, distributed in sandy areas of northern China, and is crucial for wind avoidance and sand fixation. To understand the inter- and intra-annual population dynamics of in its cold desert habitats, we conducted long- and short-term demographic studies to investigate the timing of germination, seedling survival, soil seed bank and seed longevity of natural populations on the fringe of the Tengger Desert.

This paper attempts to describe and explain the long-term evolution of wage inequality in imperial China, covering over two millennia from the Han dynasty to the Qing dynasty (202 BCE-1912 CE). Based on historical government records of official salaries, commodity prices, and agricultural productivity, we convert various forms of salaries to equivalent rice volumes and comparable salary benchmarks. Wage inequality is measured by salary ratios and (partial) Gini coefficients between official and peasant classes as well as within the official class.

Twisted halide perovskite bilayers, a type of moiré material, show square moiré patterns with exciting optical properties. Atomic-scale structure analysis and its correlation with properties are difficult to achieve due to the extreme sensitivity of organic-inorganic halide perovskites to the illuminated electron beam in conventional/scanning transmission electron microscopy. Here, we developed a low-dose exit wave reconstruction methodology with a real-space resolution of one angstrom at ∼50 e/Å, which recovers the phase information on the moiré fringes in CHNHPbI (MAPbI) twisted perovskite bilayers at atomic scale, enabling detailed structural analysis of defects and corresponding strain distribution in such moiré materials.

A patterned growth of crystals of 1,2-bis(2,5-dimethyl-3-thienyl)perfluorocyclopentene (1a) on the glass substrate with convex guides is reported by sublimation methods. The lower supersaturation of substrate surfaces with higher temperatures can facilitate the vapor-to-liquid process rather than the vapor-to-crystal process in the early stage of the sublimation. Micro-droplets of melts of 1a are generated on the sidewalls of the convex guides, then crystallized into the microcrystals, accompanied by the rearrangements of the crystallographic in-plane orientations.
