AI Article Synopsis

  • A 2-month-old female Vietnamese potbellied pig was brought to a veterinary teaching hospital due to itching (pruritus), following a recent dermatitis diagnosis in its human caretaker.
  • Skin scrape samples were examined and identified a mite species closely related to *Demodex canis*, confirming the cause of the pig's condition.
  • The pig was successfully treated with afoxolaner after ivermectin proved ineffective, and follow-up showed no more itching, suggesting afoxolaner could be a viable treatment for mite infections in pet pigs.

Article Abstract

A 2 months old female Vietnamese potbellied pig presented to a veterinary teaching hospital with a referring complaint of pruritus. A human caretaker of the pig had recently been diagnosed with a spp. dermatitis. Microscopic examination of the skin scrape samples and BLAST analysis confirmed the species of the mite as most closely related to var. canis (AY493391). The pig was treated with afoxolaner as previous treatment with ivermectin was not efficacious. Recheck examinations and follow up revealed the pig to be non-pruritic and resolving. Afoxolaner may be a therapeutic option when treating spp. infections in companion pigs.

Recent studies have reported that monitoring spinal cord perfusion pressure (SCPP) using a pressure probe to measure "intraspinal pressure" (ISP) within the subdural space at the injury site may improve the hemodynamic management of acute spinal cord injury (SCI) patients. This study aimed to investigate, within a pig model of SCI, the relationship between the ISP measured within the subdural space and the "spinal cord pressure" (SCP) measured within the spinal cord itself. Specifically, we sought to characterize the changes to ISP and SCP over time, both rostral and caudal to the injury epicenter, and in relation to native spinal cord morphometry.

The synovium is a loose connective tissue that separates the intra-articular (IA) joint compartments of all diarthrodial joints from the systemic circulation. It can be divided into two layers: the intima, a thin and cell-dense layer atop a more heterogeneous subintima, composed of collagen and various cell types. The subintima contains penetrating capillaries and lymphatic vessels that rapidly clear injected drugs from the joint space which may vary not only with drug size and charge but also with the microstructure and composition of the intima and subintima of the synovium.

To date, uterus transplantation is the only option for women with absolute uterine infertility, such as those with Rokitansky syndrome, to experience pregnancy and give birth. Despite the growing interest in uterus transplantation in recent years, several issues still require further research, including ischemia-reperfusion injury and its impact on graft quality and rejection. Recent literature has highlighted a thrombotic complication rate of up to 20% following uterus transplantation.

Multi-epitope vaccines: a promising strategy against viral diseases in swine.

Viral infections in swine, such as African swine fever (ASF), porcine reproductive and respiratory syndrome (PRRS), and foot-and-mouth disease (FMD), have a significant impact on the swine industry. Despite the significant progress in the recent efforts to develop effective vaccines against viral diseases in swine, the search for new protective vaccination strategy remains a challenge. The antigenic epitope, acting as a fundamental unit, can initiate either a cellular or humoral immune response.
