Xanthogranulomatous pyelonephritis (XPN) is an unusual complication of chronic pyelonephritis typically associated with a large burden of infected and retained kidney stones, a true urologic medical emergency. It is known to occur in middle-aged women experiencing recurrent UTIs. We report upon a case of XPN diagnosed in a 38 year old female residing in an austere area in a South American country with limited access to medical care presenting to the medical unit "COMFORT", a humanitarian mission initiated by the United States Navy with a chief complaint of lower abdominal pain.

Introduction: Laparoscopic simple nephrectomy (LSNx) is among the gold standard options for management of selected poorly functioning and most non-functioning kidneys (PFK/NFKs). Our objective was to audit our patients who had undergone LSNx for benign causes and assess their perioperative outcomes and analyse the factors correlating with these outcomes.
Materials And Methods: We reviewed our prospectively collected data of patients with PFK/NFKs due to benign causes who underwent a LSNx on a three-dimensional (3D) system via a transperitoneal approach between January 2017 and June 2023.

Xanthogranulomatous pyelonephritis is a rare condition in paediatric patients, mostly described in middle-aged female patients. We present a 7-year-old female with juvenile idiopathic arthritis, who was found to have a kidney mass with a concurrent Escherichia coli urinary tract infection. Surgical excision was done out of concern for possible malignancy.
