Should cancer pain still be considered a separate category alongside acute pain and chronic non-cancer pain? Reflections on ICD-11.

Front Pain Res (Lausanne)

May 2024

Pain and Rehabilitation Center, and Department of Health, Medicine and Caring Sciences, Linköping University, Linköping, Sweden.

Introduction: Traditionally, cancer pain has often been viewed as an independent third major category in pain medicine alongside acute pain and chronic non-cancer pain. However, the new chronic pain category MG30 in the eleventh version of International Classification of Diseases (ICD-11) includes cancer-related pain as one of its seven subgroups. In light of this, the aim of the paper is to investigate whether the traditional trichotomy should be replaced by a dichotomy between acute pain and chronic pain, cancer-related pain being part of both groups depending on the duration of pain.

Trichotomy revisited: A monolithic theory of attentional control.

Vision Res

April 2024

Texas A&M University, Department of Psychological & Brain Sciences, 4235 TAMU, College Station, TX 77843-4235, United States. Electronic address:

The control of attention was long held to reflect the influence of two competing mechanisms of assigning priority, one goal-directed and the other stimulus-driven. Learning-dependent influences on the control of attention that could not be attributed to either of those two established mechanisms of control gave rise to the concept of selection history and a corresponding third mechanism of attentional control. The trichotomy framework that ensued has come to dominate theories of attentional control over the past decade, replacing the historical dichotomy.

There is currently a lack of consensus about the nature of strengths in forensic assessments. With 273 justice-involved male youth and a fixed 3-year follow-up, this study adopted the approach of Farrington and colleagues to investigating the nature of associations between trichotomized variables, representing risks and strengths, and outcomes using pairs of odds ratios (s) and percentage point changes from base rates. Items from the Structured Assessment of Violence Risk in Youth (SAVRY), a structured professional judgment tool used to assess risk and protective factors in justice-involved youth, were employed for this purpose.

The trichotomy of HER2 expression confers new insights into the understanding and managing for breast cancer stratified by HER2 status.

Human epidermal growth factor receptor 2 (HER2) is a tyrosine kinase receptor that plays a carcinogenic role in breast cancer (BC) through gene amplification, mutation, or overexpression. Traditional methods of HER2 detection were divided into positive (immunohistochemistry (IHC) 3+/fluorescence in situ hybridization (FISH) amplification) and negative (IHC 2+/FISH-, IHC 1+, IHC 0) according to the dichotomy method. Anti-HER2-targeted therapies, such as trastuzumab and pertuzumab, have significantly improved the prognosis of HER2-positive patients.

In this paper, we propose a novel free boundary problem to model the movement of single species with a range boundary. The spatial movement and birth/death processes of the species found within the range boundary are assumed to be governed by the classic Fisher-KPP reaction-diffusion equation, while the movement of a free boundary describing the range limit is assumed to be influenced by the weighted total population inside the range boundary and is described by an integro-differential equation. Our free boundary equation is a generalization of the classical Stefan problem that allows for nonlocal influences on the boundary movement so that range expansion and shrinkage are both possible.
