We examined the effects of nutrient availability and turbidity on phytoplankton biomass over 9 years in Gwanyang Bay, Korea, which is an anthropogenically polluted and complex estuary. While dredging and reclamation shaped geochemical features, river discharge with low-turbidity water and sewage treatment plants contributed to nutrient loading. The replete levels of nutrients and short water-residence time suggest the inapplicability of the washout theory, whereas the presence of NH suppressed the growth of phytoplankton. A reduction in the river discharge caused a concomitant decline in the loading and dilution of suspended particles. All these features led to an increase in SPM, light limitation, and NH concentration. GLM estimates revealed negative effects of NH and SPM on chlorophyll a over 9 years while SEM verified synergistic effects of NH and SPM compared with positive effects of NO + NO. Our findings provide new insights into phytoplankton bloom dynamics in Gwangyang Bay.

Microbial source tracking (MST) is a critical tool for identifying sources of human and animal fecal pollution in aquatic environments. To enhance human fecal pollution tracking, this study evaluated the performance characteristics of pBI143, a cryptic plasmid recently identified for potential MST applications. Nucleic acid samples from ten animal species were screened for pBI143, revealing its presence in a small number of pigs, cows, dogs, cats, and flying fox fecal samples.

The Silway River has historically failed to meet safe fecal coliform levels due to improper waste disposal. The river mouth is located in General Santos City, the tuna capital of the Philippines and a leading producer of hogs, cattle, and poultry. The buildup of contaminants due to direct discharge of waste from chicken farms and existing water quality conditions has led to higher fecal matter in the Silway River.

In addition to traditional organophosphate esters (tOPEs), emerging organophosphate esters (eOPEs) have increasingly been detected in the environment, but their risks remain unclear. This study detected 12 tOPEs and 7 eOPEs in surface water, sediment, and suspended particulate matter (SPM) samples from important aquatic habitats and drinking water sources in Yibin (YB), Yichang (YC), Shanghai (SH), and Poyang Lake (PY) within the Yangtze River basin. The total concentration of OPEs (ΣOPEs) in surface water, sediment, and SPM from these four regions were 22.

Industrial activities are a major source of organophosphorus flame retardants (OPFRs) and plasticizers in aquatic environments. This study investigated the distribution of 40 OPFRs in a river impacted by major industrial manufacturing plants in Eastern China by target analysis. Nontarget analysis using high-resolution mass spectrometry was further employed to identify novel organophosphorus compounds (NOPs).

Microbial community coalescence is a ubiquitous ecological process in various ecosystems. However, limited research has addressed the effects of the coalescence on microbial ecological processes and network structure, particularly in the context of sewage discharge during high amplitude hydrological periods. Employing 16S rRNA sequencing and species source tracking analysis, we investigated the coalescence pattern of bacterioplankton in the Chishui river and sewage across various hydrological periods.
