Changes in ventilation, gas exchange and hemodynamic parameters were examined in 16 anginal patients, exposed to stepwise stress in the presence of beta-block. Physical stress of 30-60-90 W was associated with less pronounced hemodynamic response, as compared to a control bicycle-ergometric test, in anginal patients. Propranolol reduced ventilation, oxygen consumption and carbon dioxide expiration during a 30-60 W exercise. When stress was increased to 90 W following beta-block, oxygen consumption decreased further, while the increment of ventilation and the respiratory coefficient was more marked, as compared to the controls. The pattern of ventilation and gas exchange variation was dependent on the magnitude of stress and related to hemodynamic shifts due to the beta-block.

Guava is a fruit crop widely exploited in the Northeast region of Brazil. However, its exploitation is limited by water scarcity and, in many cases, producers are forced to use water with high levels of salts in irrigation. Thus, it is necessary to develop techniques to induce plant tolerance to salt stress, and the foliar application of a non-enzymatic compound such as ascorbic acid is a promising alternative to mitigate the deleterious effects on plants.

Objectives: To analyse the effects on respiratory function, lung volume and the regional distribution of ventilation and perfusion of routine postural repositioning in mechanically ventilated critically ill patients.
Methods: Prospective descriptive physiological study. We evaluated gas-exchange, lung mechanics, and Electrical Impedance Tomography (EIT) determined end-expiratory lung impedance and regional ventilation and perfusion distribution in five body positions: supine-baseline (S1); first lateralisation at 30° (L1); second supine position (S2), second contralateral lateralisation (L2) and third final supine position (S3).

The mung bean ( (Linn) Wilczek.) is a major grain crop in China, but its yield is significantly impacted by weeds. However, no pre-emergence herbicides are registered for mung bean fields in the China Pesticide Information Network.

Freshwater depletion becomes a significant challenge as the population grows and food demand rises. We evaluated the responses of lettuce cultivars () under saline stress in photosynthetic responses, production, and ion homeostasis. We used a randomized block design in a 3 × 5 factorial scheme with five replications-the first factor: three cultivars of curly lettuce: SVR 2005, Simpson, and Grand Rapids.

Global changes and growing demands have led to the development of new molecular approaches to improve crop physiological performances. Carbonic anhydrase (CA) enzymes, ubiquitous across various life kingdoms, stand out for their critical roles in plant photosynthesis and water relations. We hypothesize that the modulators of human CAs could affect plant physiology.
