Naturally occurring phyllosilicate minerals such as talc and vermiculite in conjunction with n-tetra butyl ammonium bromide (TBAB) co-catalyst were found to be efficient in the coupling of CO with epoxides to form cyclic carbonates. The reaction was carried out in a pressurized autoclave reactor at moderate pressures of 10-35 bars and temperatures of 100-150 °C. The optimized catalyst system exhibited > 90% conversion of the epoxides and > 90% selectivity for the desired cyclic carbonates, in the presence or absence of a solvent. The selectivity of the catalytic system could be improved with heat pre-treatment of the phyllosilicates albeit this resulted in slightly lower epoxide conversion. The results obtained using the heat treated phyllosilicates strongly support the hydrogen bond assisted mechanism for the cycloaddition of epoxides and CO. The cycloaddition reaction could also be carried out in the absence of TBAB, although lower cyclic carbonate yields were observed. The phyllosilicate part of the catalyst system is heterogeneous, easy to separate after completion of reactions and reusable a number of runs without loss of activity.

Background: β-lactoglobulin (β-Lg), a major allergen in dairy products, can trigger severe allergic reactions and even fatal outcomes in infants. In this work, we develop a new low background current redox recycling strategy by conjugating the electrochemical mediator to trimetallic hybrid nanoparticles (NPs)-dispersed graphene as the signal tag, which is coupled with DNAzyme amplifications to construct highly catalytic and ultrasensitive β-Lg aptasensor.
Results: Target β-Lg molecules bind aptamers in DNAzyme/aptamer duplexes to release active DNAzymes to initiate cyclic cleavage of hairpin substrates.

Transition metal sulfides, despite their abundance of electrochemically active sites, often demonstrate inadequate rate performance and mechanical stability. The development of a multi-dimensional hierarchical architecture has proven to be an effective approach to address the limitations associated with sulfides. In the present study, MoNiCo-S nanorods featuring hierarchical micro-/nano-structures were successfully synthesized through a straightforward methodology that involved "in situ growth-etching-vulcanization".

In bioelectrochemical systems (BES), biofilm formation and architecture are of crucial importance, especially for flow-through applications. The interface between electroactive microorganisms and the electrode surface plays an important and often limiting role, as the available surface area influences current generation, especially for poor biofilm forming organisms. To overcome the limitation of the available electrode surface, nanoparticles (NPs) with a magnetic iron core and a conductive, hydrophobic carbon shell were used as building blocks to form conductive, magnetic micropillars on the anode surface.

This work presents an optimization of the construction, treatment, and activation of 3D-printed electrochemical sensors (E-3D). For this, was used a 2-full factorial design examining three key variables at two levels: electrode height, electrode diameter, and printing speed. Moreover, it evaluates various physical, chemical, and electrochemical methods to treat and activate the E-3D surface.

Hot dry rock (HDR) geothermal development faces challenges due to the difficulty of stimulating fluid flow and heat-exchange fracture channels within deep, low-porosity, and low-permeability reservoirs. A liquid nitrogen cyclic cold shock method was proposed, using liquid nitrogen as a fracturing fluid. The large temperature difference between the liquid nitrogen and the hot rock induces thermal stress, forming a complex pore-fracture network.
