The phenolic pool is considered to be an important intermediate during the catalytic conversion of biomass. However, no direct evidence has been reported on its full picture on a molecular level due to the huge challenges in probing the reactive and lowly volatile phenolic oligomers with state-of-the-art technologies. Herein, we report the online detection and structural identification of a phenolic pool by utilizing in-situ atmospheric-pressure photoionization mass spectrometry, demonstrating that the phenolic pool is formed through repolymerization of monomers with an equidistant group pattern and acts as a key mechanistic step for both valuable aromatic products and undesired coke. The exploration of the real reactive species is also of great importance for the rational design and synthesis of advanced catalysts with high activity.

Background: Methotrexate (MTX) is an agent used in the treatment of many neoplastic and non-neoplastic diseases and is known to cause oxidative damage in normal tissues. Curcumin (Cur) is a natural polyphenol compound with powerful antioxidant and antiapoptotic effects. In this study we investigate the effects of Cur on MTX-induced ovarian damage.

Disinfection byproducts (DBPs) in swimming pool water are a significant public health concern. The formation of aromatic halogenated DBPs in swimming pool water has not been clarified previously. In this study, the occurrence of aromatic halogenated DBPs in swimming pool water was examined, and it was found that halohydroxybenzoic acids (HBAs) and halobenzoquinones (HBQs) were the most dominant aromatic halogenated DBPs in swimming pool water that were continuously formed.

Article Synopsis
  • Soybean crops are significantly affected by rust epidemics caused by a specific pathogen, leading to yield losses and increased fungicide usage.
  • A study tested a phosphite solution of nickel and potassium as an induced resistance (IR) treatment, finding that it dramatically reduced the germination of rust spores and disease severity in infected soybean plants.
  • The IR treatment not only enhanced nutrient levels like potassium and nickel but also preserved the plants' photosynthetic health and boosted the expression of defense-related genes, suggesting a robust biochemical response to fungal infections.

The allosteric SERCA (Sarcoplasmic/Endoplasmic Reticulum Ca-ATPase) activator CDN1163 has been recently added to the group of pharmacological tools for probing SERCA function. We chose to investigate the effects of the compound on T lymphocyte Ca stores, using the well-described Jurkat T lymphocyte as a reliable cell system for Ca signaling pathways. Our study identified the lowest concentrations of the SERCA inhibitors thapsigargin (TG) and 2,5-di-( butyl)-1,4-benzohydroquinone (tBHQ) capable of releasing Ca, permitting the differentiation of the TG-sensitive SERCA 2b Ca store from the tBHQ-sensitive SERCA 3 Ca store.
