The mild generation of nitrogen-centred radicals from N-F reagents has become a convenient synthetic tool. This methodology provides access to the aminative difunctionalisation of alkenes and alkynes and the radical ring-opening of cyclopropanes, among other similar transformations. This review article aims to provide an overview of recent developments of such processes involving radical reactions and N-F reagents using copper-based catalysts.

Article Synopsis
  • Humans use dietary supplements to address malnutrition, but their impact on gut microbiota is not well understood, particularly regarding antibiotic resistance genes.
  • This study investigates how dietary zinc supplements affect the transfer of multidrug resistance plasmids between bacteria, using specific bacterial strains and standardized assays.
  • Results show that zinc supplementation significantly reduces bacterial populations involved in plasmid transfer and suggests that zinc could be a promising strategy to combat antibiotic resistance in both humans and animals.*

Development of methods for the sp C-H transformations of allenes has received much attention, and it presents a powerful tool for the synthesis of complicated allene-containing bioactive molecules. With a copper-catalyzed radical relay, sp allenic C-H arylation and alkynylation were established herein, using various aryl boronic acids and trimethoxysilyl-substituted alkynes as carbon nucleophiles and using electrophilic N-F reagents as nitrogen-centered radical precursors. These methods featured excellent site selectivity to deliver fully substituted allenes efficiently.

Existing methods for the mass detection of viruses are limited to the registration of small amounts of a viral genome or specific protein markers. In spite of high sensitivity, the applied methods cannot distinguish between virulent viral particles and non-infectious viral particle debris. We report an approach to solve this long-standing challenge using the SARS-CoV-2 virus as an example.

This study investigated the development of biodegradable films made from a combination of polyethylene glycol (PEG), carboxymethyl cellulose (CMC) and mixtures from natamycin and ferulic acid. The films were characterized for their surface microstructure, antioxidant activity, thermal stability, mechanical properties, permeability and antifungal/bacterial activity. The addition of natamycin and ferulic acid to the film matrix enhanced antioxidant activity, thermal stability, antimicrobial activity, reduced the water vapor permeability (WVP) to 1.

Masters of Mediation: MN(SiMe) in Functionalization of C(sp)-H Latent Nucleophiles.

Chemistry

Department of Chemistry, School of Advanced Sciences, Vellore Institute of Technology, Vellore, 632014, Tamil Nadu, India.

Organoalkali compounds have undergone a far-reaching transformation being a coupling partner to a mediator in unusual organic conversions which finds its spot in the field of sustainable synthesis. Transition-metal catalysis has always been the priority in C(sp)-H bond functionalization, however alternatively, in recent times this has been seriously challenged by earth-abundant alkali metals and their complexes arriving at new sustainable organometallic reagents. In this line, the importance of MN(SiMe) (M=Li, Na, K & Cs) reagent revived in C(sp)-H bond functionalization over recent years in organic synthesis is showcased in this minireview.
