Bioassay-directed isolation of secondary metabolites from an extract of TJ403-CA4 isolated from the medicinally valuable arthropod afforded five new and 10 known compounds (-). All the compounds (except ) belong to a minor class of highly rigid 6-5-5-5-fused tetracyclic cyclopiane-type diterpenes known to be exclusively produced by members of the genus. The structures and absolute configurations of the new compounds (-) were elucidated by extensive spectroscopic analyses, including HRESIMS and 1D and 2D NMR, single-crystal X-ray diffraction, and comparison of the experimental electronic circular dichroism data. Compounds and represent the first examples of cyclopianes bearing a C-20 carboxyl group; compound represents the first example of a cyclopiane with a -hydroxymethyl group; compound represents the second example of a cyclopiane bearing a hydroxy group at C-7; compound represents the first example of a cyclopiane bearing a hydroxy group at C-8. Compounds and exhibited activity against MRSA, with MIC values of 4.0 and 2.0 μg/mL, respectively. In addition, the structure-antibacterial activity relationship (SAR) of compounds - is discussed.

Carotenoids, the bright yellow, orange, and red pigments of many fruits and vegetables, are essential components of the human diet as bioactive compounds not synthesized in animals. As a staple crop potato has the potential to deliver substantial amounts of these nutraceuticals despite their lower concentration in tubers compared to edible organs of other plant species. Even small gains in tuber carotenoid levels could have a significant impact on the nutritional value of potatoes.

Herbal and Dietary Supplements as Adjunctive Treatment for Mild SARS-CoV-2 Infection in Italy.

During the COVID-19 pandemic, several observational studies proved a certain efficacy of nutraceuticals, herbal products, and other dietary supplements as adjuvant therapies used alongside antiviral drugs. Although their use has not been widespread in Italy, according to preliminary evidence, many supplements with demonstrated immunomodulatory effects, such as vitamins C and D, herbal medicines and essential oils, might relieve the respiratory symptoms of COVID-19, since SARS-CoV-2 can activate inflammasome-mediated inflammatory signaling pathways. Other observational studies have shown that herbal treatments, such as and ginseng, help alleviate respiratory symptoms and reduce serum levels of inflammatory cytokines, which are typically overexpressed in both adult and pediatric SARS-CoV-2 patients.
