The relationship between habitual physical activity and skin mechanical properties.

Published: May 2021

Background: Physical activity (PA) is important for body health. A few reports suggested that PA also influenced skin structure and components. Little data are available on the influence of PA on skin mechanical properties (SMP). Here, we investigated the relationship between PA and SMP.

Methods: Twenty-five healthy Japanese female subjects (31.0 ± 3.3 years) were enrolled in the study. To monitor the 24-hr pulse rate, a wrist watch-type pulse monitor was used. PA intensity was divided into five PA intensity zones (max, anaerobic, aerobic, fat combustion, and warm-up) by the pulse monitor. The average values of the time spent on each intensity for 70 days were calculated. To measure SMP, a Cutometer was used at the end of the monitoring. R0 indicated the height of the maximal skin deformation, and R6 was the ratio between viscoelastic and elastic deformation.

Results: R0 was positively correlated with the time spent in four of the five PA intensity zones (max, anaerobic, aerobic, and fat combustion), whereas R6 was negatively correlated with the time spent in these four PA intensity zones. The time of warm-up did not correlate with SMP.

Conclusion: These results suggest that habitual moderate-to-vigorous PA influences SMP.

Assessing trends in ectoparasiticidal drugs used to control ticks and flies in farm animals: A four-year analysis reveal differences between epidemiological zones at country level in Uruguay.

The use of ectoparasiticides is a major concern in the control of parasites. In this study, we examined the trends and patterns of veterinary medicines use comparing between a high-risk epidemiological zone (HRZ) and a low-risk epidemiological zone (LRZ) for ectoparasites over a four-year period (2017-2020) at country level data. The objective of this study was to analyze the patterns of ectoparasiticide use in Uruguayan cattle, using the Anatomical Therapeutic Chemical Classification System for Veterinary Drugs (ATCvet) and dose indicators to consider regional variations in the animal population and production intensity.

This manuscript critically examines the intricate interplay between diverse foreign direct investment (FDI) flows, energy intensity, and their consequential effects on circular economies (CEs), specifically in terms of the waste recycling ratio, within the member states of the European Union over the period spanning from 2000 to 2021. Our findings substantiate that inflows and outflows of FDI have different implications for waste recycling, where an increase of 1% OFDI implies an increase of recycling ratio by 0.03%, a relationship that is potentially contingent upon the inherent characteristics of the flow itself in relation to its contributions to local productivity dynamics.

Linking sap flow and tree water deficit in an unmanaged, mixed beech forest during the summer drought 2022.

Department of Silviculture and Forest Ecology of the Temperate Zones, University of Göttingen, Göttingen, Germany.

Temperate mixed forests are currently experiencing severe drought conditions and face increased risk of degradation. However, it remains unclear how critical tree physiological functions such as sap flow density (SFD) and tree water deficit (TWD, defined as reversible stem shrinkage when water is depleted), respond to extreme environmental conditions and how they interact under dry conditions. We monitored SFD and TWD of three co-occurring European tree species (Fagus sylvatica, Fraxinus excelsior and Acer pseudoplatanus) in dry conditions, using high temporal resolution sap flow, dendrometer, and environmental measurements.

Neural diversity can expand the encoding capacity of a circuitry. A striking example of diverse structure and function is presented by the afferent synapses between inner hair cells (IHCs) and spiral ganglion neurons (SGNs) in the cochlea. Presynaptic active zones at the pillar IHC side activate at lower IHC potentials than those of the modiolar side that have more presynaptic Ca channels.
