Voltage-gated potassium channels (K) and cyclic nucleotide-binding domain-containing cation channels HCN, CNG, and KCNH are the evolutionarily related families of ion channels in animals. Their homologues were found in several lineages of eukaryotes and prokaryotes; however, the actual phylogenetic and structural diversity of these ion channels remains unclear. In this work, we present a taxonomically broad investigation of evolutionary relationships and structural diversity of K, HCN, CNG, and KCNH and their homologues in eukaryotes focusing on channels from different protistan groups. We demonstrate that both groups of channels consist of a more significant number of lineages than it was shown before, and these lineages can be grouped in two clusters termed K-like channels and CNBD-channels. Moreover, we, for the first time, report the unusual two-repeat tandem K-like channels and CNBD-channels in several eukaryotic groups, i.e. dinoflagellates, oomycetes, and chlorarachniophytes. Our findings reveal still underappreciated phylogenetic and structural diversity of eukaryotic ion channel lineages.

Background: In clinical practices, doctors usually need to synthesize several single-modality medical images for diagnosis, which is a time-consuming and costly process. With this background, multimodal medical image fusion (MMIF) techniques have emerged to synthesize medical images of different modalities, providing a comprehensive and objective interpretation of the lesion.
Purpose: Although existing MMIF approaches have shown promising results, they often overlook the importance of multiscale feature diversity and attention interaction, which are essential for superior visual outcomes.

In the context of the transformation of urban-rural dual economic structure, one of the important ways to realize urban-rural integrated development is to carry out county industrial structure upgrading. Based on the policy of returning home to start business as a quasi-natural experiment, this paper empirically analyzes the relationship between returning home to start business and upgrading of county industrial structure. Selecting 1997 counties across the country from 2000 to 2021 as the research sample, a multi-temporal double-difference model is used to test the impact of the place-based policy on county industrial structure and the mechanism of the impact, and the result confirms that the implementation of the pilot policy of returning home entrepreneurship plays a positive and obvious role in promoting the level of industrial development of county-level areas.

Conventional artificial intelligence (AI) systems are facing bottlenecks due to the fundamental mismatches between AI models, which rely on parallel, in-memory, and dynamic computation, and traditional transistors, which have been designed and optimized for sequential logic operations. This calls for the development of novel computing units beyond transistors. Inspired by the high efficiency and adaptability of biological neural networks, computing systems mimicking the capabilities of biological structures are gaining more attention.

Sativene-related sesquiterpenoids including -sativene analogs are a large member of fungal secondary metabolites with phytotoxic and growth-promoting effects on different plants. In this report, a series of sativene-related sesquiterpenoids with diverse carbon skeletons (-, sativene/isosativene/-sativene/cyclosativene/-isosativene ring systems) were isolated from the plant pathogenic fungus based on a molecular networking strategy. The undescribed structures were elucidated based on NMR spectra, X-ray diffraction analysis, chemical derivation, and calculated electronic circular dichroism calculations.

Fluorescence in situ hybridization enables the visualization of organisms in the environment without having to culture them. Here, we describe a FISH protocol to visualize oomycete structures (mycelia, sporangiophores, sporangia, and oospores) directly as well as from colonized plant material. The protocol utilizes organic compounds with low toxicities and does not require a permeabilization step.
