Background: Enteral tube feeding (ETF) is often used in an attempt to optimize the nutritional status. The aim of this study was to observe the long term effect of ETF and to compare the start of ETF with the current European guidelines on nutrition care in CF.

Method: From all patients who received ETF (ETFp) between February 2000 and September 2016 in the Ghent University Hospital (GUH) or Brussels University Hospital (BUH), z-scores for body weight (W), height (H), growth velocity (GV) and BMI, FEV%, and FVC% were retrospectively collected from the patients' medical record, 3 years before and 5 years after the year of ETF initiation. Gender, age, and pancreatic status matched controls were selected from the GUH database.

Results: All baseline (T0) measurements in ETFp were worse compared to controls. Only 11% of the controls had a Hz < -1.6 compared 58% of the ETFp. After the initiation of ETF a rapid weight gain was noted until the second year (T + 2:-1.9 (-2.8; -1.0) vs. T0:-2.7 (-3.2; -2.1) (p = 0.01) with a stabilization afterwards. A rapid GVz increase was noted at T + 1:1.0 (-0.8; 1.9) vs. T0:-1.5 (-2.0;-0.3). After the start of ETF until T + 3, a stabilization of FEV% was noted. However, compared to controls, it remained significantly lower (p < 0.05).

Conclusion: ETF as a nutritional intervention has its effect on weight, height, GV, and BMI. To our knowledge this is the first study that describes the evolution of growth in ETFp. The effect on GV argues for a faster introduction of ETF in malnourished children with CF.

The tightly-regulated spatial and temporal distribution of zinc ion concentrations within cellular compartments is controlled by two groups of Zn transporters: the 14-member ZIP/SLC39 family, facilitating Zn influx into the cytoplasm from the extracellular space or intracellular organelles; and the 10-member ZnT/SLC30 family, mobilizing Zn in the opposite direction. Genetic aberrations in most zinc transporters cause human syndromes. Notably, previous studies demonstrated osteopenia and male-specific cardiac death in mice lacking the ZnT5/ zinc transporter, and suggested association of two homozygous frameshift variants with perinatal mortality in humans, due to hydrops fetalis and hypertrophic cardiomyopathy.

Objective: Extremely premature infants are treated with acetaminophen (APAP) for pain and patent ductus arteriosus. High doses of APAP in adults are toxic, and a recent study found an association between APAP metabolite levels in mothers' breast milk and both bronchopulmonary dysplasia (BPD) and retinopathy of prematurity (ROP) in their premature infants. In this study, we determined levels of APAP metabolites in urine of infants at high risk for BPD and ROP.

Maintenance treatment with vedolizumab in paediatric inflammatory bowel disease (VEDOKIDS): 54-week outcomes of a multicentre, prospective, cohort study.

Background: Infliximab and adalimumab are the only biologics thus far approved for paediatric patients with inflammatory bowel disease (IBD), so other biologics, such as vedolizumab, are prescribed off-label. Despite its frequent use, prospective data for vedolizumab treatment in children are available only for short-term induction outcomes. We aimed to evaluate the long-term efficacy and safety of maintenance therapy with vedolizumab in paediatric patients with IBD.

Background: Studies show that tube feeding does not improve clinical outcomes, and professional guidelines recommend against its use for individuals with advanced dementia. Yet, our preliminary work demonstrates a preference for tube feeding among Chinese-American dementia caregivers. We propose linguistic and cultural adaptation of "Making Choices: Feeding Options for Patients with Dementia (MCFODA) to create the Chinese version of this efficacious decision aid intervention.
