Ellagitannins are the main extractible phenolic compounds in oak wood; the monomers vescalagin and castalagin, lyxose/xylose-bearing monomers grandinin and roburin E, dimers roburins A and D and lyxose/xylose-bearing dimers roburins B and C are the principal ones. These compounds are responsible for the high durability of wood and may contribute to the organoleptic quality of wines and spirits (color, astringency, bitterness). Despite their importance, their presence and forms in distilled spirits are not well known. The aim of this work was therefore to develop and validate a method to identify and quantify oak wood ellagitannins in Cognac using high liquid chromatography-triple quadrupole (LC-QQQ) analysis. The method was validated using vescalagin as the standard and by studying sensitivity, linearity in working range, intraday repeatability, and intraday precision in order to quantify individual ellagitannins in this complex matrix.

Droughts of increasing severity and frequency are a primary cause of forest mortality associated with climate change. Yet, fundamental knowledge gaps regarding the complex physiology of trees limit the development of more effective management strategies to mitigate drought effects on forests. Here, we highlight some of the basic research needed to better understand tree drought physiology and how new technologies and interdisciplinary approaches can be used to address them.

Background And Aims: Tropical forests exchange more carbon dioxide (CO2) with the atmosphere than any other terrestrial biome. Yet, uncertainty in the projected carbon balance over the next century is roughly three-times greater for the tropics than other ecosystems. Our limited knowledge of tropical plant physiological responses, including photosynthetic, to climate change is a substantial source of uncertainty in our ability to forecast the global terrestrial carbon sink.

Background: Anaphylaxis is a systemic allergic reaction that is potentially life-threatening. Occupational anaphylaxis is an anaphylaxis that occurs in an occupational context. In this position paper, we propose diagnostic criteria for occupational anaphylaxis and provide an overview of the current state of knowledge in terms of prevalence, triggers, prevention, and management.

The dendrochronological parameters of 97 pedunculate oak ( L.) trees including 20 plus trees (142-year-old on average) and four half-sib families for four of them were analyzed considering also specifically years of the most severe droughts that were identified using average monthly air temperature and precipitation data. The tree-ring width (TRW) was mostly affected by air temperature that had the largest cross-dating indices (CDI), up to 78% maximum.
