A novel and efficient visible-light-induced decarboxylative cyclization/hydrogenation cascade reaction of α-oxocarboxylic acids and 2-isocyanobiaryls has been developed. Without the need of any external photosensitizer, oxidant, and reductant, this method offers a mild and green approach for the synthesis of diverse alcohols in moderate to good yields. A mechanism indicated that an electron donor-acceptor complex-driven decarboxylation, radical addition/cyclization, and photochemical reduction of ketones to alcohols could be involved in the reaction.

In recent years, visible light-induced ligand-to-metal charge transfer (LMCT) has emerged as an attractive approach for synthesizing a range of functionalized molecules. Compared to conventional photoredox reactions, photoinduced LMCT activation does not depend on redox potential and offers diverse reaction pathways, making it particularly suitable for the activation of inert bonds and the functional modification of complex organic molecules. This review highlights the indispensable role of photoinduced LMCT in synthetic chemistry, with a focus on recent advancements in LMCT-mediated hydrogen atom transfer (HAT), C-C bond cleavage, decarboxylative transformations, and radical ligand transfer (RLT) reactions.

The presence of drugs in wastewater effluent is of concern due to their effects on the aquatic fauna and flora and there are growing efforts for their removal from the environment. In this paper, we study the photocatalytic visible-light degradation of naproxen, an over-the-counter anti-inflammatory drug, using 5% copper-doped TiO. The photocatalyst was characterized by XRD and BET surface area measurements.

Norzoanthamine is a structurally complex polycyclic natural product that expresses a broad range of biological activities, rendering facile access to it and its analogs of considerable importance in drug discovery and development. However, strategies for efficient access to this class of marine alkaloids remain lacking. Here, we report a strategy, characterized by three key photochemical reactions, that we used to synthesize norzoanthamine in 16 steps.

Photoredox-catalyzed cross-coupling reaction is an efficient strategy for the construction of organic molecules. Herein, we developed a method to synthesize α-arylthioanisoles by constructing C-S bonds in the presence of a Ru-photoredox catalyst. Thus, a series of α-arylthioanisole compounds were efficiently obtained through decarboxylative cross-coupling under mild conditions.
