Thalassemia and hemoglobinopathies are the most common cause of high morbidity and mortality in India. Detection of carriers and premarital counseling play an important role in preventing the birth of a thalassemic child. The present study aimed to detect large numbers of asymptomatic carriers in rural areas of West Bengal, India. The present cross-sectional study was conducted over a period of 10 years. Thalassemia awareness programs and detection camps were organized at the community level. After signed written consent was obtained, the collected blood samples were subjected to a complete blood count (CBC) in an automated blood cell counter and then analyzed by high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC); in difficult cases, samples were sent to the reference laboratory for molecular characterization. Out of 287,258 samples collected, 32,921 (11.46%) cases revealed abnormal hemoglobins (Hbs); of these, 31,782 (11.06%) carried heterozygous states (carriers/traits), and the remainder were either homozygous or compound heterozygous for different hemoglobinopathies. Two common variants were revealed in the study, namely β-thalassemia (β-thal) (7.23%) and Hb E [β26(B8)Glu→Lys, : c.79G>A] (2.77%) traits. Among homozygous or compound heterozygous states, Hb E/β-thal (0.14%) and β-thal major (β-TM) (0.12%) were predominant. In rural areas of West Bengal, the most common Hb variants detected were β-thal and Hb E traits. In view of the high prevalence of hemoglobinopathies in this region, routine premarital screening and genetic counseling should be emphasized and encouraged to prevent the birth of a thalassemic child, and thus curtailing the burden on families and the health economy.

Background: This study examined the wealth-related inequality in women healthcare seeking behaviour for under-five children illness in Afghanistan and its determinants.
Methods: Data of 32409 mothers/caregivers of children under-five were extracted from Afghanistan Multiple Indicator Cluster Survey conducted in 2022. Wealth-related inequalities in women healthcare seeking behaviour for under-five children illness was investigated using Erreygers and Wagstaff concentration indices and curve.

Introduction: Existing evidence suggests a lower uptake of cervical cancer screening among Indian women. Coverage is lower in rural than urban women, but such disparities are less explored. So, the present study was conducted to explore the self-reported coverage of cervical cancer screening in urban and rural areas stratified by socio-demographic characteristics, determine the spatial patterns and identify any regional variations, ascertain the factors contributing to urban-rural disparities and those influencing the likelihood of screening among women aged 30-49 years factors residing in urban, rural, and overall Indian settings.

Objectives: This study identified profiles of outpatient physician follow-up care and other practice features, mostly after detection of incident mental disorders (MD), and associated these profiles with patient characteristics and subsequent adverse outcomes.
Methods: A cohort of 170,957 patients age 12 + with a new or recurrent MD detected in 2019-20 was investigated based on data from the Quebec Integrated Chronic Disease Surveillance System. Latent class analysis was performed to identify follow-up care profiles, mostly within one year of MD detection.

Peccaries (collared peccary-CP-and white-lipped peccary-WLP) are an essential source of protein and income for rural communities in the Amazon region. Since 1980s, researchers in the Amazon have reported recurrent local disappearances of WLP populations. Although such disappearances impact the species conservation and the food security of rural societies, no studies have drawn consistent conclusions about the causes of these population collapses.

Background: Obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) prevalence has risen significantly, affecting millions globally and posing a major healthcare burden. OSA is strongly associated with cardiovascular diseases (CVD) such as heart failure, stroke, and ischemic heart disease. However, trends in CVD-related mortality among individuals with OSA remain underexplored.
