Access to sonographers and sonologists is limited in many communities around the world. Telerobotic sonography (robotic ultrasound) is a new technology to increase access to sonography, providing sonographers and sonologists the ability to manipulate an ultrasound probe from a distant location and remotely perform ultrasound examinations. This narrative review discusses the development of telerobotic ultrasound systems, clinical studies evaluating the feasibility and diagnostic accuracy of telerobotic sonography, and emerging use of telerobotic sonography in clinical settings. Telerobotic sonography provides an opportunity to provide real-time ultrasound examinations to underserviced rural and remote communities to increase equity in the delivery of diagnostic imaging.
Intratumoral injections often lack visibility, leading to unpredictable outcomes such as incomplete tumor coverage, off-target drug delivery and systemic toxicities. This study investigated an ultrasound (US) and x-ray imageable thermosensitive hydrogel based on poloxamer 407 (POL) percutaneously delivered in a healthy swine model. The primary objective was to assess the 2D and 3D distribution of the hydrogel within tissue across three different needle devices and injection sites: liver, kidney, and intercostal muscle region.
There is a riskof positive resection margins (RMs) in patients who had undergone robot-assisted laparoscopic radical prostatectomy (RARP) following systematic prostate biopsies. This study examined the riskof positive RM post-RARP when magnetic resonance imaging-ultrasonography (MRI-US) fusion biopsy was performed along with systematic prostate biopsy. Sixty-one patients who had undergone MRI fusion biopsy and systematic transrectal and transperineal biopsies, followed by RARP, at our hospital between September 2020 and October 2023 were included.
Purpose: Semantic segmentation is a fundamental part of the surgical application of deep learning. Traditionally, segmentation in vision tasks has been performed using convolutional neural networks (CNNs), but the transformer architecture has recently been introduced and widely investigated. We aimed to investigate the performance of deep learning models in segmentation in robot-assisted radical prostatectomy (RARP) and identify which of the architectures is superior for segmentation in robotic surgery.
Background: Traditional head and neck cancer treatment involves open surgery, cytotoxic chemotherapy, and conventional radiotherapy planning. Emerging techniques aim to improve precision and reduce associated toxicity and functional impairment in current practice. This review article describes four such adaptations in image guidance, tailored to next generation therapies.
Background: Endovascular procedures are the preferred method for treating peripheral arterial disease. However, limited imaging options during these procedures, such as X-rays and contrast media, expose patients and healthcare professionals to potentially harmful radiation. This study introduces a robotic ultrasound system (RUSS) for navigating endovascular procedures in order to reduce radiation and provide additional information.
