Additive effects of temperature and water availability on pregnancy in a viviparous lizard. | LitMetric

AI Article Synopsis

Article Abstract

One of the greatest current threats to biodiversity is climate change. However, understanding of organismal responses to fluctuations in temperature and water availability is currently lacking, especially during fundamental life-history stages such as reproduction. To further explore how temperature and water availability impact maternal physiology and reproductive output, we used the viviparous form of the European common lizard () in a two-by-two factorial design manipulating both hydric and thermal conditions, for the first time. We collected blood samples and morphological measurements during early pregnancy and post-parturition to investigate how water availability, temperature and a combination of the two influence maternal phenology, morphology, physiology and reproductive output. We observed that dehydration during gestation negatively affects maternal physiological condition (lower mass gain, higher tail reserve mobilization) but has little effect on reproductive output. These effects are mainly additive to temperature regimes, with a proportional increase in maternal costs in warmer environments. Our study demonstrates the importance of considering combined effects of water and temperature when investigating organismal responses to climate changes, especially during periods crucial for species survival such as reproduction.

Cadmium (Cd) and arsenic (As) contamination risk in paddy soils has raised global concern. In order to scientifically and objectively evaluate the bioavailability of soil Cd, As and the risk of Cd or As threshold in contaminated farmland, this study was conducted to investigate different types of extractants for their potential extraction efficiency of Cd and As. Soils from two different parent materials in Hunan, Yueyang and Yiyang, typical double-cropping rice production areas in the south of China, were used as test soils.

Herein, we have established the formation of diaryl amide by aminocarbonylation of nitrobenzene with boronic acids. The method works in the catalytic presence of economical and commercially available CuI salt, which was significantly promoted by the FeSe(CO) cluster. Mo(CO) serves as a source of CO, and it also acts as a reductant with a combination of iron cluster.

Chlorophyll fluorescence responses to CO availability reveal crassulacean acid metabolism in epiphytic orchids.

Crassulacean acid metabolism (CAM), a specialized mode of photosynthetic carbon assimilation characterized by nocturnal fixation of atmospheric CO and vacuolar malic acid storage, is found in a wide variety of vascular plant species, mainly those inhabiting water-limited environments. Identifying and characterizing diverse CAM species enhances our understanding of the physiological, ecological, and evolutionary significance of CAM photosynthesis. In this study, we examined the effect of CO elimination on chlorophyll fluorescence-based photosynthetic parameters in two constitutive CAM Kalanchoe species and six orchids.

Differentiating reactive chlorine species for micropollutant abatement in chloride containing water by electrochemical oxidation process.

Water Res

Guangdong Provincial Key Laboratory of Environmental Pollution Control and Remediation Technology, School of Environmental Science and Engineering, Sun Yat-Sen University, Guangzhou 510275, PR China; Institute of Sun Yat-Sen University in Shenzhen, PR China. Electronic address:

Electrochemical oxidation process (EOP) is promising for micropollutant degradation in water treatment, where chloride ions (Cl) are inevitable in aqueous systems, leading to the EOP/Cl system. The oxidation of Cl at anodes generates reactive chlorine species (RCS), including heterogeneous chlorine species (Cl), homogeneous free available chlorine (FAC), chlorine dioxide (ClO), and chlorine radicals (CRs). This study developed a method to differentiate various RCS responsible for the removal of carbamazepine in EOP/Cl using the RuO/IrO-Ti anode.
