Heat dissipation is a serious limitation for increasingly miniaturized and functionalized electronics, resulting in the continuous need for developing highly efficient cooling methods. Here, utilizing the strong van der Waals force between super-aligned carbon nanotubes (SACNTs), a self-supported three-dimensional (3D) CNT/CaCl radiator with a more outstanding cooling performance than Al cooling fins was designed. Unlike the soft CNT sponges, these 3D structures could sustain a high pressure of 4.5 MPa with a small compression of 10% and thus are defined as hard CNT sponges. Hard CNT sponges show a 44.3% higher cooling efficiency than commercial Al cooling fins at a humidity of 50% due to the massive latent heat of water combining with the high thermal conductivity of CNTs and the high emissivity of the composites. The self-adjusting moisture absorption-desorption process could dissipate heat by water evaporation when electronics work at high power and spontaneously absorb moisture to regenerate the sponges at the standby mode of electronics. Besides, hard CNT sponges possess a much lower density (0.98-1.70 g cm) than aluminum (2.7 g cm). This high-performance cooler provides an alternative thermal management method for electronics.

The continuous development and application of pesticides in agriculture require robust multiresidue detection methods to guarantee food safety. This study introduces a novel method for multiresidue determination of pesticides in eggplants using the QuEChERS procedure, incorporating a clean-up step using carbon nanotubes stabilized in chitosan sponge (CNT-CS) and ultra-high performance liquid chromatography with tandem mass spectrometry (UHPLC-MS/MS) for analysis. Upon identifying the optimal extraction conditions, various sorbents were assessed for their efficacy in the dispersive solid-phase extraction (d-SPE).

Microwave absorbers with infrared camouflage are highly desirable in military fields. Self-supporting 3D architectures with tailorable shapes, composed of FeCoNi alloy/carbon nanotubes (CNTs) @ carbon nanofibers (CNFs), were fabricated in this study. On the one hand, multiple loss mechanisms were introduced into the high-elastic sponges.

Heatable super hydrophobic polyurethane (PU) sponges (S-GNS/CNT/PVA@PU) containing three-dimensional (3D) carbon nano-networks (CNNs) coatings made from two-dimensional (2D) expanded graphite nano-sheets (GNS) bridged by one-dimensional (1D) carbon nano-tubes (CNT) were constructed using polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) as binder, in which light and/or electric energy could be rapidly converted into heat to reduce the viscosity of spilled heavy oils, resulting in greatly increased oil. Their heavy oil recovery rate could reach 792 kg/(m·h) under combined light and Joule heating of 1 sun and 5 V. Surface heat dissipating coefficient Ks, heat dissipating index n, and surface heat absorption capacity Cs were studied relating to sizes and shapes of surface heating fields under varied heating modes.

Article Synopsis
  • Two types of porous supporting materials were developed using chemical vapor deposition: CNT-decorated diatomite (CNT/DE) and CNT sponges (CNS) for creating form-stable phase-change material (PCM) composites with polyethylene glycol (PEG).
  • The CNT/DE matrix featured well-entangled nanotubes and enabled high PEG loading (75 wt%) without leakage, while the CNS formed a 3D porous structure that also supported high PEG incorporation.
  • Both PCM composites exhibited excellent thermal reliability through numerous melting-solidification cycles and demonstrated reduced cooling power requirements in building applications, indicating their potential for effective thermal energy storage in building materials.

In this work, the simple fabrication of a new superhydrophobic magnetic sponge based on CNTs, NiFeO nanoparticles, and PDMS was investigated. CNTs were synthesized by chemical vapor deposition (CVD) on a nickel ferrite catalyst supported on aluminum oxide (NiFeO/AlO). The synthesis of nickel ferrite (NiFe) was accomplished using the sol-gel method, yielding magnetic nanoparticles (43 Amkg, coercivity of 93 Oe, 21-29 nm).
