Objective: The intent of this project was to objectively describe the frequency of pharmacist prescribing in acute care pediatrics and neonatology and to determine the medications most often prescribed by pharmacists practicing in a jurisdiction that permits pharmacists' prescribing.
Methods: This was a subgroup analysis of a retrospective observational study using prescribing data from an electronic medical record system used in 5 acute care hospitals (1 pediatric, 4 primarily adult but with pediatric and neonatal units) within Calgary, Alberta, Canada.
Results: Considering orders for pediatric or neonatal patients only, there was a mean (SD) of 126 (226) prescriptions per pharmacist per year, with a wide range (1-1101 per year). Considering only the 9 clinical pharmacist full-time equivalents (FTEs) assigned to pediatrics and/or neonatology (i.e., not including dispensary pharmacist FTE), this represents 572 prescriptions per clinical pharmacist FTE per year (726 in pediatrics and 380 in neonatology). The most common medication classes on pediatric units included anti-infective agents, central nervous system agents, and gastrointestinal agents. In NICUs, blood formation, coagulation and thrombosis agents (mainly iron), electrolytes, caloric and water balance agents (primarily sodium supplements), and vitamins were also commonly prescribed by pharmacists.
Conclusions: As the scope of pharmacy practice expands to include prescribing, health team leadership can use these data to support incorporation of this role into practice. Prescribing pharmacists can ensure appropriate use of many medications used in acutely ill infants and children, potentially improving efficiency and quality of care.

Unlabelled: This research aimed to describe the effect of azithromycin combined with fluticasone propionate aerosol inhalation on immune function in children with chronic cough caused by Mycoplasma pneumoniae (MP) infection. This study was a retrospective analysis in which 110 children with chronic cough caused by MP infection were divided into two groups based on different treatment methods: 58 cases in the control group treated with azithromycin dry suspension and 52 cases in the intervention group treated with azithromycin dry suspension and fluticasone propionate inhalation aerosol. Lung function, inflammatory factors, immune indicators, laboratory-related indicators, adverse reactions, and therapeutic effects were compared between the two groups.

Background: Multiple Sulfatase Deficiency (MSD) is a rare inherited lysosomal storage disorder characterized by loss of function mutations in the SUMF1 gene that manifests as a severe pediatric neurological disease. There are no available targeted therapies for MSD.
Methods: We engineered a viral vector (AAV9/SUMF1) to deliver working copies of the SUMF1 gene and tested the vector in Sumf1 knock out mice that generally display a median lifespan of 10 days.

Background And Objectives: Infants with neonatal hyperbilirubinemia (NH) often require admission after their birth hospitalization for treatment with phototherapy. Our aim was to align local practice with updated national guidelines to promote efficiency and decrease length of stay (LOS) for this patient population by ∼ 10% over a 15-month period using quality improvement methodology.
Methods: Our improvement initiative included infants younger than age 14 days born at more than 35 weeks' gestation admitted to the hospital medicine service with an NH diagnosis.
