Although influenza is primarily considered a respiratory infection and causes significant respiratory mortality, evidence suggests that influenza has an additional burden due to broader consequences of the illness. Some of these broader consequences include cardiovascular events, exacerbations of chronic underlying conditions, increased susceptibility to secondary bacterial infections, functional decline, and poor pregnancy outcomes, all of which may lead to an increased risk for hospitalization and death. Although it is methodologically difficult to measure these impacts, epidemiological and interventional study designs have evolved over recent decades to better take them into account. Recognizing these broader consequences of influenza virus infection is essential to determine the full burden of influenza among different subpopulations and the value of preventive approaches. In this review, we outline the main influenza complications and societal impacts beyond the classical respiratory symptoms of the disease.

Unlabelled: Policy Points A redirection of measurement in health care from a narrow focus on diseases and care processes towards assessing whole person health, as perceived by the person themself, may provide a galvanizing view of how health care can best meet the needs of people and help patients feel heard, seen, and understood by their care team. This review identifies key tensions to navigate as well as four overarching categories of whole person health for consideration in developing an instrument optimized for clinical practice. The categories (body and mind, relationships, living environment and finances, and engagement in daily life) include nine constituent domains.

Background: An intact blood-brain barrier (BBB) is critical for optimal brain health, and even transient or highly localized disruption of the BBB can have devastating consequences for neural functioning. BBB breakdown has been implicated in Alzheimer's Disease (AD) pathogenesis, and elevated BBB permeability has been observed in APOE e4 carriers compared to non-carriers. As prior studies have focused on a priori, AD-vulnerable regions rather than whole-brain analyses, little is understood about broader patterns of BBB breakdown that may relate to AD risk.

Background: The overuse of antipsychotics in persons with dementia in long-term care (LTC) has been a source of clinical concern, public attention, and policy intervention for over 30 years. Targeted quality improvement, broader awareness of risks, and other initiatives have resulted in substantial reductions in antipsychotic use in LTC settings in North America and elsewhere. Limited evidence suggests that reductions in antipsychotic use may be resulting in unintended consequences, such as substitution with alternate, but similarly harmful, psychotropic medications.

Leveraging Leadership Development to Pre-Empt Leader Derailments.

Behav Sci (Basel)

November 2024

Psychology Department, Claremont McKenna College, Claremont, CA 91711, USA.

This article examines the role of leadership development interventions in pre-empting leader derailments. The research literature suggests that derailments are not only commonplace but associated with a range of significant costs, from financial, to mental health, to morale, to employee turnover, to missed opportunities. Given these costly consequences, this article seeks to answer the question: "Can leadership development-especially at early managerial-career stages and during transitions-play a significant role in mitigating leader derailments?" Research suggests that the majority of leadership failures occur-or are more visible-at senior organizational levels.
