Background: Sternoclavicular joint (SCJ) pathologies such as instability are rare; therefore, SCJ surgery is performed infrequently. Complications of these surgeries can be devastating. This study evaluated complications, and particularly infections, after SCJ surgery.

Methods: A retrospective cohort of 68 patients who underwent SCJ surgery with a minimum follow-up of 1 year was reviewed. Patients' characteristics, intraoperative, and postoperative complications were retrieved. In case of a reoperation, relevant data from the reoperation and microbiological findings were collected.

Results: Twenty-two men and 46 women with a mean age of 37.5 years (range, 13-70 years) were analyzed. A complication occurred in 26 of 68 patients (38.2%). In 16 patients (23.5%), this was an infection. Cutibacterium acnes was the pathogen in 14 of these infections. Infection occurred more often in men than in women (P = .02). A total of 26 reoperations were performed in our cohort: 14 due to clinical signs of infection, 9 due to instability, 1 due to complaints of SCJ osteoarthritis, and 2 due to other causes.

Conclusion: Complications after SCJ surgery occur more often than previously described. C. acnes infections are often seen. When left untreated, these complications can lead to persistent complaints or recurrent instability due to failure of reconstruction. Therefore, it is of utmost importance to identify infections at an early stage, or better, to prevent them. The use of benzoyl peroxide gel preoperatively seems effective in reducing early C. acnes infections in this type of surgery.

Background: Belatacept is approved for the prophylaxis of organ rejection in Epstein-Barr virus (EBV)-seropositive kidney transplant recipients and is associated with a risk of post-transplant lymphoproliferative disorder (PTLD).

Methods: Data from the Organ Procurement and Transplantation Network were used to examine patterns of belatacept use, describe patient characteristics, and estimate risk of PTLD in EBV-seropositive, kidney-only transplant recipients receiving belatacept- or calcineurin inhibitor (CNI)-based immunosuppression as part of US Food and Drug Administration-mandated safety monitoring.

Results: During the study period (June 15, 2011-June 14, 2016), 94.

In general, the nerve cells of the peripheral nervous system regenerate normally within a certain period after the physical damage of their axon. However, when peripheral nerves are transected by trauma or tissue extraction for cancer treatment, spontaneous nerve regeneration cannot occur. Therefore, it is necessary to perform microsurgery to connect the transected nerve directly or insert a nerve conduit to connect it.

Background: Sternoclavicular joint (SCJ) instability can lead to pain, reduced function, and an inability to perform sports and activities of daily living. Reconstruction of the SCJ using hamstring autograft in a figure-of-8 configuration has demonstrated good outcomes at short- and midterm follow-ups, but there is a paucity of literature on long-term outcomes.

Purpose: To evaluate the long-term clinical and functional outcomes after SCJ reconstruction, with a focus on return to sport, instability recurrence, and revision surgery.

Antibiotic therapy is the primary treatment for infective endocarditis (IE), yet up to 50% of patients still require surgical intervention. However, surgical intervention carries significant risks of mortality and complications for IE patients, and there remains a lack of consensus on which preoperative characteristics of infective endocarditis have a substantial impact on patient prognosis. Particularly, some IE patients develop periannular abscesses, leading to more severe complications.

Article Synopsis
  • The study explored how a specific circular RNA, circFNDC3B, influences the development of abdominal aortic aneurysm (AAA) by analyzing its expression levels in affected vs. normal tissues.
  • Researchers used various assays to understand circFNDC3B's biological functions and molecular mechanisms, confirming that it is significantly more expressed in AAA tissues and has effects on vascular smooth muscle cell behavior.
  • The findings indicate that circFNDC3B contributes to AAA progression by acting as a sponge for miR-1270, increasing levels of PDCD10, which is essential for understanding potential therapeutic targets for AAA treatment.
