The enterovirus is a genus of single-stranded, highly diverse positive-sense RNA viruses, including Human Enterovirus A-D and Human Rhinovirus A-C species. They are responsible for numerous diseases and some infections can progress to life-threatening complications, particularly in children or immunocompromised patients. To date, there is no treatment against enteroviruses on the market, except for polioviruses (vaccine) and EV-A71 (vaccine in China).

Correlative Light Electron Microscopy (CLEM) is a powerful technique to investigate the ultrastructure of specific cells and organelles at sub-cellular resolution. Transmission Electron Microscopy (TEM) is particularly useful to the field of virology, given the small size of the virion, which is below the limit of detection by light microscopy. Furthermore, viral infection results in the rearrangement of host organelles to form spatially defined compartments that facilitate the replication of viruses.

Complement provides powerful, fast responses in the human circulation to SARS-CoV-2 (COVID-19 virus) infection of the lower respiratory tract. COVID-19 effects were investigated in a revised human Mass Action model of complement's alternative pathway (AP) responses. Bursts of newly circulating virions increased the fission of Complement protein C3 into C3a and C3b via stimulation of the lectin pathway or inhibited complement factor H.

Since the first emergence of COVID-19 on the global stage, there has been a wealth of evidence to suggest that SARS-Cov2 is not merely a pulmonary pathogen. This virus is unique in its ability to disrupt cellular pathways related to protein homeostasis, mitochondrial function, stress response, and aging. Such effects raise concerns about the long-term fate of survivors of COVID-19 infection, particularly regarding neurodegenerative diseases.
