Basil ( spp.) is a traditional herbal medicine abundant in antioxidants such as phenolic compounds. As part of a diet, this herb is proved to have some roles in decreasing the risk of cancer, and in the treatment of inflammation and neurodegenerative diseases. This study aims to explore the total phenolic and flavonoid content of two new basil hybrids growing in Romania, namely "Aromat de Buzau" (AB) and "Macedon" (MB). The antioxidant capacity of those two species was also analyzed by DPPH and cyclic voltammetry. Six different flavonoids, such as catechin (+), rutin, hyperoside, naringin, naringenin, and genistein, were separated, identified, and quantified by HPLC-DAD chromatography, for the first time, from romanian basil hybrids. The main flavonoid of the extracts was found to be naringin which is present in the highest amount (26.18 mg/kg) in "Aromat de Buzau" () methanolic extract. These results suggest that dietary intake of these new hybrids can be a source of antioxidant compounds.

Article Synopsis
  • The study addresses the challenge of variable solar radiation affecting the efficiency of solar dryers, especially for sensitive crops like basil leaves during winter.
  • A hybrid solar dryer (HSD) combining solar energy and liquid petroleum gas (LPG) was developed, featuring an automatic air circulation system to enhance drying efficiency and accommodate varying weather conditions.
  • Testing indicated that drying basil leaves at 60°C with a 90% air change rate significantly reduced drying time by up to 35.71% in summer and 35.56% in winter, while also improving energy consumption and product quality.

Celery is a food allergen that must be included in the ingredient list of commercial food products in the European Union. This is a challenge for the food industry because of potential cross-contamination and undeclared ingredients because of their low concentrations. So, the food industry requires expedited high-performance analytical methods.

Article Synopsis
  • Two studies, BEST-CLI and BASIL-2, looked at different surgeries for patients with serious leg circulation problems and found mixed results.
  • The analysis focused on patients from BEST-CLI who had severe leg issues and underwent either open bypass surgery or a less invasive method.
  • Results showed that the surgical group had fewer major limb problems and needed fewer follow-up surgeries compared to the endovascular group, but death rates were similar for both groups.

Aim: Cognitive impairments are a core feature of first-episode psychosis (FEP) and one of the strongest predictors of long-term psychosocial functioning. Cognition should be assessed and treated as part of routine clinical care for FEP. Cognitive screening offers the opportunity to rapidly identify and triage those in most need of cognitive support.
