Herein, we report the design and synthesis of four new thiophene-bridged D-π-A configured organic dyes T1-4 comprising different donors, π-spacers and anchoring units, as potential sensitizers and co-sensitizers for DSSCs. The current work also highlights their structural, photophysical, thermal, electrochemical, theoretical, and photoelectrochemical studies, including evaluation of their structure-property relationships. The optical results revealed that the dyes T1-4 display λabs and λemi in the range of 402-461 nm and 556-575 nm, respectively, with a bandgap in the order of 2.31-2.58 eV. Furthermore, the results showed that the dyes possess all the pre-requisites to act as sensitizers/co-sensitizers. Among the tested dyes, the device based on sensitizer T2 achieved the highest PCE compared to the other three dyes, under the standard conditions. Furthermore, their co-sensitized devices were fabricated by co-adsorbing them with the well-known Ru-based MH-12 sensitizer and interestingly the co-sensitizer T3 carrying an alkoxy group and a barbituric acid anchor displayed the highest PCE of 8.79%, which is much higher than that of MH-12 alone (8.18%). Conclusively, the study furnishes a deeper understanding of the intricacies involved in the structural modification of sensitizers/co-sensitizers in achieving an enhanced performance of the devices.

Ternary organic solar cells (T-OSCs) represent an efficient strategy for enhancing the performance of OSCs. Presently, the majority of high-performance T-OSCs incorporates well-established Y-acceptors or donor polymers as the third component. In this study, a novel class of conjugated small molecules has been introduced as the third component, demonstrating exceptional photovoltaic performance in T-OSCs.

Designing and synthesizing well-defined crystalline catalysts for the photocatalytic oxidative coupling of amines to imines remains a great challenge. In this work, a crystalline dumbbell-shaped titanium oxo cluster, [TiO(Thdc)(Dmg)(PrO)] (Ti10, Thdc = 2,5-thiophenedicarboxylic acid, Dmg = dimethylglyoxime, PrOH = isopropanol), was constructed through a facile one-pot solvothermal strategy and treated as a catalyst for the photocatalytic oxidative coupling of amines. In this structure, Thdc serves as the horizontal bar, while the {TiDmg} layers on each side act as the weight plates.

Chiral organic molecules possessing high quantum yields, circular dichroism, and circularly polarized luminescence values have great potential as optically active materials for future applications. Recently, the identification of a promising class of inherently chiral compounds was reported, namely macrocyclic 1,3-butadiyne-linked pseudo-meta[2.2]paracyclophanes, displaying high circular dichroism and related g values albeit modest quantum yields.

All-polymer solar cells have garnered particular attention thanks to their superior thermal, photo, and mechanical stabilities for large-scale manufacturing, yet the performance enhancement remains largely restrained by inherent morphological challenges of the bulk-heterojunction active layer. Herein, a 3D Y-branched polymerized small-molecule acceptor named PYBF, characteristic of high molecular weight and glass transition temperature, is designed and synthesized by precisely linking C-symmetric benzotrifuran with Y6 acceptors. In comparison to the benchmark thiophene-bridged linear PYIT acceptor, an optical blue-shift absorption is observed for PYBF yet a slightly higher power conversion efficiency (PCE) of 15.

Hybrid organic-inorganic perovskite solar cells (PSCs) have drawn great attention in the past decade due to the rapid growth of their power conversion efficiency (PCE) and the advantage of their low-cost fabrication. The hole-transport materials (HTMs) play a crucial role in achieving high efficiency and operational stability of PSCs. In this work, we report the synthesis of two novel conjugated polymers by coupling of the alkylsilyl-substituted benzo[1,2-:4,5-']dithiophene unit with the thiophene-bridged pyrazine block and their investigation as dopant-free HTMs in n-i-p PSCs.
