Models of muscle contraction are typically based on a measured force-velocity relation embodied as Hill's contractile element [1]. Adopting a particular force-velocity relation dictates the muscle's mechanical properties. Dynamic crossbridge based models, such as Huxley's [2], typically focus on ultrastructural mechanics. This study adapts a dynamic lumped model of cardiac muscle contraction [3] for description of mouse soleus skeletal muscle. This compact, dynamic model exhibits the main features of skeletal muscle contraction with few assumptions. The main differences between cardiac and skeletal muscle dynamics are described. This approach gives one equation and set of parameters capable of modeling isometric and isotonic contractions, skeletal muscle's force-length relation, variations in contractility, and the force-velocity relation. This new constitutive equation may be useful for modeling striated muscle as part of larger biomechanical models.

Background: Lack of motivation and behavioral abnormalities are the hallmarks of postpartum depression (PPD). Severe uterine contractions during labor are pain triggers for psychiatric disorders, including PPD in women during the puerperium. Creating biomarkers to monitor PPD may help in its early detection and treatment.

Transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) has been used for many years to study the pathophysiology of amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS). Based on single- or dual-pulse TMS and EMG and/or single motor unit (MU) recordings, many groups have described a loss of central inhibition as an early marker of ALS dysfunction, reflecting a state of cortical 'hyperexcitability'. This conclusion is not without its detractors, however, leading us to reexamine this issue using 4-pulse TMS, shown previously to be more effective for testing central motor pathway functional integrity.

Purines such as ATP are regulatory transmitters in motility of the gastrointestinal tract. The aims of this study were to propose functional roles of purinergic regulation of esophageal motility. An isolated segment of the rat esophagus was placed in an organ bath, and mechanical responses were recorded using a force transducer.

Actin linked regulatory mechanisms are known to contribute contraction/relaxation in smooth muscle. In order to clarify whether modulation of polymerization/depolymerization of actin filaments affects relaxation process, we examined the effects of cytochalasin D on relaxation process by Ca removal after Ca-induced contraction of β-escin skinned (cell membrane permeabilized) taenia cecum and carotid artery preparations from guinea pigs. Cytochalasin D, an inhibitor of actin polymerization, significantly suppressed the force during relaxation both in skinned taenia cecum and carotid artery.

The purpose of this study was the detection and characterization of synergistic muscle activity. Using T-map MRI, T values for 10 forearm muscles in 11 healthy adult volunteers were obtained in the resting state and after isotonic forearm supination and pronation exercises with the elbow extended. T was normalized by Z = (T-T)/SD, where T was T after exercise, while T and SD were the reference values of 34 ms and 3 ms, respectively.
