Zearalenone (ZEN) is a potent estrogenic toxin in swine, contributing to economic losses in herds via reproductive consequences such as pelvic organ prolapse (POP). To better understand the relationship between ZEN-consumption and reproductive symptoms, an animal feeding study with pubertal gilts was designed. The gilts were exposed to three different treatments: solvent-only feed for 21 days (n = 10), ZEN-spiked feed for 7 days followed by solvent-only feed for 14 days (n = 10), and ZEN-spiked feed for 21 days (n = 10). The gilts did not display any ZEN-related symptoms throughout any of the treatments. At the end of the trial the elastic properties of the USLs from participating gilts were evaluated along two loading directions: main direction (MD) and perpendicular direction (PD). The elastic properties included average stresses at 2% and 4% strains, and secant moduli. Overall the elastic properties of the USLs did not vary across treatment groups or between loading directions. In the MD, average stress increased from 32.96 ± 4.43 kPa at 2% strain to 63.21 ± 9.69 kPa at 4% strain, with a secant modulus of 1.52 ± 0.27 MPa. In the PD, average stress increased from 40.82 ± 4.22 kPa at 2% strain to 83.38 ± 9.17 kPa at 4% strain, with a secant modulus of 2.13 ± 0.31 MPa. Continued research into the relationship between ZEN consumption and reproductive symptoms such as POP is necessary in order to mitigate their deleterious effects in herds.

Capsules, which are potentially-active fluid droplets enclosed in a thin elastic membrane, experience large deformations when placed in suspension. The induced fluid-structure interaction stresses can potentially lead to rupture of the capsule membrane. While numerous experimental studies have focused on the rheological behavior of capsules until rupture, there remains a gap in understanding the evolution of their mechanical properties and the underlying mechanisms of damage and breakup under flow.

AISI 316L stainless steel is extensively used in various fields, including medicine. In this study, in order to improve antibacterial properties, reduce elastic modulus, increase hydrophilicity and delay corrosion on the surface of AISI 316L stainless steel pieces for biomedical applications, zinc and magnesium elements were used for coating. Zn monolayer, Zn-Mg bilayer, and Zn-Mg-Zn triple coatings were deposited on AISI 316L substrates using the thermal evaporation method.

A series of anionic poly(acrylamide--sodium acrylate)/poly(ethylene glycol), PAN/PEG, hybrids were conveniently synthesized free radical aqueous polymerization by integrating bentonite, kaolin, mica, graphene and silica, following a simple and eco-friendly crosslinking methodology. A comparative perspective was presented on how integrated nanofillers affect the physicochemical properties of hybrid gels depending on the differences in their structures. Among the five types of nanofillers, bentonite-integrated hybrid gel had the highest water absorbency, while graphene-integrated gel had the lowest.

Decellularized artificial blood vessels prepared using physical and chemical methods often exhibit limitations, including poor mechanical performance, susceptibility to inflammation and calcification, and reduced patency. Cross-linking techniques can enhance the stiffness, as well as anti-inflammatory and anti-calcification properties of decellularized vessels. However, conventional cross-linking methods fail to effectively alleviate residual stress post-decellularization, which significantly impacts the patency and vascular remodeling following the implantation of artificial vessels.

This study introduces a novel method for fabricating multicavity, honeycomb-shaped collagen aerogels characterized by continuous pores. We have taken a unique approach to lyophilizing collagen hydrogels, which are UV-irradiated collagen solutions gelatinized in a carbonate buffer solution. The focus of this study was to investigate the effect of UV irradiation times on collagen solutions on collagen hydrogels and aerogels.
