The use of morphometry (and stereology), especially in conjunction with immunocytochemistry, in surgical and experimental pathology is reviewed. The combined use of morphometry and immunocytochemistry permits the study of secretory products and the distinction between cells that produce them, e.g., as in the pancreas. Several examples to illustrate the application of immunocytochemical techniques in morphometry are presented. For example, using this approach on the pancreas, it was shown that not only B cells, but also A and D cells, seem to undergo pathologic changes in a prediabetic organism. Since morphologic alterations may be distributional as well as quantitative, a model for the assessment and statistical evaluation of the distribution of objects within an area is discussed. Similar procedures were used to analyze the distribution of cytochrome P-450 molecules along intracellular membranes; however, special labeling techniques were necessary for this quantification in the electron microscope. Immunoenzyme cytochemically stained secretions can also be studied morphometrically, and microdensitometry and microfluorometry can also be used to quantify immunocytochemical reactions, as is shown in the analysis of the intralobular distribution of NADPH-cytochrome P-450 reductase in the rat liver. Finally, the BIVAS semiautomatic system for morphometric measurements, developed at the Department of Pathology of the University of Basel, is briefly described.

Neurons derived from induced pluripotent stem cells (h-iPSC-Ns) provide an invaluable model for studying the physiological aspects of human neuronal development under healthy and pathological conditions. However, multiple studies have demonstrated that h-iPSC-Ns exhibit a high degree of functional and epigenetic diversity. Due to the imprecise characterization and significant variation among the currently available maturation protocols, it is essential to establish a set of criteria to standardize models and accurately characterize and define the developmental properties of human neurons derived from iPSCs.

Background And Objectives: Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) and neurohistopathology are important correlates for evaluation of disease progression in multiple sclerosis (MS). Here we used experimental autoimmune encephalomyelitis (EAE) as an animal model of MS to determine the correlation between clinical EAE severity, MRI and histopathological parameters.

Introduction: Bronchiectasis is a complex lung disease with poorly studied systemic manifestations. Patients with bronchiectasis-associated sarcopenia exhibit a specific differential profile of functional muscle phenotype (vastus lateralis, VL), which may be analyzed using imaging (ultrasound and magnetic resonance imaging, MRI).
Methods: Ultrasound and MRI were used to explore functional imaging parameters in quadriceps of 20 patients with stable bronchiectasis and 10 healthy controls.

Vertebrates' tongues reflect part of their adaptations to diverse feeding strategies, the types of food items they eat, and the environments where they live. Our contribution was to analyze the macro- and microscopic morphology of the tongues of two porpoise species ( and ; juveniles and adults), whose biology is little known. Macroscopic and microscopic studies (conventional histology, scanning electron microscopy, immunohistochemistry, and morphometry) were performed.
