In this Letter, we report a chip-based photonic radio-frequency (RF) mixer with a maximum conversion gain of -9 and image rejection ratio of 50 dB for 3.2 GHz to 13.2 GHz RF frequency range. This is achieved by the combined use of optical carrier suppression modulation and on-chip stimulated Brillouin scattering. These results will stimulate future implementations of integrated photonic RF mixers in complicated electromagnetic environments.

The Omicron variants of SARS-CoV-2 have been spreading globally and have never disappeared from our sight, indicating that their coexistence with humans has become a fact, and monitoring its evolution and spread remains a current task. Although polymerase chain reaction (PCR) is the most commonly used virus detection method, it requires labor-intensive and time-consuming procedures in a laboratory setting. Herein, a multichannel nanoplasmonic sensing chip based on surface enhanced Raman spectroscopy (SERS) was developed for detecting N and S proteins, as well as IgG and IgM, related to SARS-CoV-2 Omicron variants.

Metasurface spectrometers beyond resolution-sensitivity constraints.

Sci Adv

College of Information Science and Electronic Engineering, Zhejiang University, Hangzhou 310027, China.

Conventional spectrometer designs necessitate a compromise between their resolution and sensitivity, especially as device and detector dimensions are scaled down. Here, we report on a miniaturizable spectrometer platform where light throughput onto the detector is instead enhanced as the resolution is increased. This planar, CMOS-compatible platform is based around metasurface encoders designed to exhibit photonic bound states in the continuum, where operational range can be altered or extended simply through adjusting geometric parameters.

Nonlinear photonics has unveiled new avenues for applications in metrology, spectroscopy, and optical communications. Recently, there has been a surge of interest in integrated platforms, attributed to their fundamental benefits, including compatibility with complementary metal-oxide semiconductor (CMOS) processes, reduced power consumption, compactness, and cost-effectiveness. This paper provides a comprehensive review of the key nonlinear effects and material properties utilized in integrated platforms.

Soliton microcombs provide a chip-based, octave-spanning source for self-referencing and optical metrology. We use a silicon nitride integrated photonics foundry to manufacture 280 single-chip solutions of octave-spanning microcombs on a wafer. By group-velocity dispersion (GVD) engineering with the waveguide cross section, we shape the soliton spectrum for dispersive-wave spectral enhancements at the frequencies for f-2f self-referencing.

Audio Signal-Stimulated Multilayered HfO/TiO Spiking Neuron Network for Neuromorphic Computing.

Nanomaterials (Basel)

August 2024

Collaborative Innovation Center of Advanced Microstructures, Nanjing University, Nanjing 210093, China.

As the key hardware of a brain-like chip based on a spiking neuron network (SNN), memristor has attracted more attention due to its similarity with biological neurons and synapses to deal with the audio signal. However, designing stable artificial neurons and synapse devices with a controllable switching pathway to form a hardware network is a challenge. For the first time, we report that artificial neurons and synapses based on multilayered HfO/TiO memristor crossbar arrays can be used for the SNN training of audio signals, which display the tunable threshold switching and memory switching characteristics.
