We have developed the first photodonors for the trace amino neurotransmitters, β-phenylethylamine (DPSY1) and β-methylphenylethylamine (DPSY2). Our photodonors react rapidly with photosensitized singlet dioxygen (1O2) to yield the amines. The photodelivery of β-phenylethylamine into aqueous solutions by employing liposome scaffolds is successfully demonstrated.

The emerging field of photoredox catalysis in mammalian cells enables spatiotemporal regulation of a wealth of biological processes. However, the selective cleavage of stable covalent bonds driven by low-energy visible light remains a great challenge. Herein, we report that red light excitation of a commercially available dye, abbreviated , leads to catalytic cleavage of stable azo bonds in both aqueous solutions and hypoxic cells and hence a means to photodeliver drugs or functional molecules.

Bioconjugate gold-based nanostructures combining the plasmonic photothermal effect with photothermal-triggered DNA delivery are appealing materials for medical diagnostic and therapy for cell-based disease. In this study, we demonstrate the use of surface hybridization to prepare DNA-modified gold nanorods to be used as photo-delivery system for single stranded oligonucleotides. The as prepared DNA modified gold nanorods have strong absorption bands in the visible and near-infrared regions in which the absorbed light through photothermal effect, induces a surface temperature increasing up to the melting temperature with consequent DNA release.
