The increasing demand in rapid wound dressing and healing has promoted the development of intraoperative strategies, such as intraoperative bioprinting, which allows deposition of bioinks directly at the injury sites to conform to their specific shapes and structures. Although successes have been achieved to varying degrees, either the instrumentation remains complex and high-cost or the bioink is insufficient for desired cellular activities. Here, we report the development of a cost-effective, open-source handheld bioprinter featuring an ergonomic design, which was entirely portable powered by a battery pack. We further integrated an aqueous two-phase emulsion bioink based on gelatin methacryloyl with the handheld system, enabling convenient shape-controlled in situ bioprinting. The unique pore-forming property of the emulsion bioink facilitated liquid and oxygen transport as well as cellular proliferation and spreading, with an additional ability of good elasticity to withstand repeated mechanical compressions. These advantages of our pore-forming bioink-loaded handheld bioprinter are believed to pave a new avenue for effective wound dressing potentially in a personalized manner down the future.

Beneficial Effects of Tilapia Fish Skin on Excisional Skin Wound Healing in a Type I Diabetic Rat Model.

J Biomed Mater Res B Appl Biomater

January 2025

Department of Surgery, Anesthesiology and Radiology, Faculty of Veterinary Medicine, Assiut University, Assiut, Egypt.

IntroductionProlonged hyperglycemia in diabetic patients often impairs wound healing, leading to chronic infections and complications. This study aimed to evaluate the potential of fresh Tilapia fish skin as a treatment to enhance wound healing in diabetic rats. MethodsThirty-nine healthy adult albino rats, weighing between 150 and 200 g, were divided into three groups: non-diabetic rats with untreated wounds [C-], diabetic rats with untreated wounds [C+], and diabetic rats treated with fresh Tilapia skin [TT].

In this study, chitosan/curcumin (CS/Cur) and chitosan/papain (CS/Pa) nanoparticles were prepared and then characterized by Fourier transform infrared (FTIR), X-ray diffraction (XRD), and differential light scattering (DLS). Subsequently, release rate, porosity, swelling, degradability, anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, antibacterial, and cell viability tests were conducted to investigate and compare the healing potential of the nanoparticles for various types of wounds. The results of FTIR, XRD, and DLS indicated that the nanoparticles were manufactured correctly with a hydrodynamic diameter of 429 nm (CS/Cur) and 460 nm (CS/Pa), and zeta potential of 4.

Influence of deep-eutectic and organic solvents on the recovery, molecular mass, and functional properties of dextran: Application using dextran film.

Int J Biol Macromol

December 2024

Bioprocess Engineering Laboratory, School of Chemical and Biotechnology, Centre for Bioenergy, SASTRA Deemed to be University, India. Electronic address:

The novelty of this study is to examine the impact of different solvent systems, namely organic and deep eutectic solvents, on recovery yield, antioxidant activity, poly-dispersity index, and functional properties of microbial dextran. The optimized conditions for maximum dextran recovery were obtained using organic solvent found to be: supernatant: organic solvent - 1:4 v/v; organic solvents: ethanol, isopropanol, and acetone; temperature: 0 °C; and time: 16 h. Though a similar structure was obtained for dextran recovered using various solvents, the degree of branching varied, with DES-precipitated dextran having the highest branching of 20 % α-(1,3) linkages.

Electronic address:

The development of functional hydrogel dressings with robust mechanical properties has posed a significant challenge in expediting the healing process of MRSA-infected wounds. To address this, a composite hydrogel, comprising carboxylated soybean cellulose nanocrystals (CNCs), poly(N-isopropyl acrylamide) (PNIPAM), dimethyl diallyl ammonium chloride (PDADMAC), and kaolin (CN/P-K) was synthesized. CNCs served to stabilize the interpenetrating polymer networks of PNIPAM and PDADMAC through hydrogen bonding and electrostatic interactions, respectively, while the kaolin interlayer improved the material toughness.
