Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) have emerged as promising porous optoelectronic compositions for energy conversion and sensing applications. The enormous structural possibilities, the large variety of photo- and redox-active building blocks along with several post-synthetic functionalization strategies make MOFs an ideal platform for photochemical and photoelectrochemical developments. Because MOFs assemble all the active building units in a dense fashion, the non-aggregated yet proximally positioned species ensure efficient photon absorption to drive photoinduced charge transfer (PCT) reactions for energy conversion and sensing. Hence, understanding the PCT processes within MOFs as a function of the topological and electronic structures of the donor-acceptor (D-A) moieties can provide transformative strategies to design new low-density compositions.

Terahertz Saturable Absorption across Charge Separation in Photoexcited Monolayer Graphene/MoS Heterostructure.

J Phys Chem Lett

January 2025

Key Laboratory of Materials Physics, Institute of Solid State Physics, HFIPS, Chinese Academy of Sciences, Hefei 230031, China.

Unveiling the nonlinear interactions between terahertz (THz) electromagnetic waves and free carriers in two-dimensional materials is crucial for the development of high-field and high-frequency electronic devices. Herein, we investigate THz nonlinear transport dynamics in a monolayer graphene/MoS heterostructure using time-resolved THz spectroscopy with intense THz pulses as the probe. Following ultrafast photoexcitation, the interfacial charge transfer establishes a nonequilibrium carrier redistribution, leaving free holes in the graphene and trapping electrons in the MoS.

Photoinduced ligand-to-metal charge transfer (LMCT) in organic synthesis: reaction modes and research advances.

Chem Commun (Camb)

January 2025

Key Laboratory of Medicinal Chemistry for Natural Resource, Ministry of Education, Yunnan Provincial Center for Research & Development of Natural Products, School of Pharmacy, Yunnan University, Kunming, 650091, P. R. China.

In recent years, visible light-induced ligand-to-metal charge transfer (LMCT) has emerged as an attractive approach for synthesizing a range of functionalized molecules. Compared to conventional photoredox reactions, photoinduced LMCT activation does not depend on redox potential and offers diverse reaction pathways, making it particularly suitable for the activation of inert bonds and the functional modification of complex organic molecules. This review highlights the indispensable role of photoinduced LMCT in synthetic chemistry, with a focus on recent advancements in LMCT-mediated hydrogen atom transfer (HAT), C-C bond cleavage, decarboxylative transformations, and radical ligand transfer (RLT) reactions.

Oxygen vacancy-rich defective tungsten oxide (WO) modified by Prussian blue for efficient photocatalytic carbon dioxide conversion and tetracycline degradation.

J Colloid Interface Sci

December 2024

Laboratory of Alternative Energy Conversion Systems, Department of Mechanical Engineering, School of Engineering, University of Thessaly, Pedion Areos 38834, Greece. Electronic address:

The coupling of carbon dioxide (CO) with epoxides to produce cyclic carbonates is a desirable decarbonization approach, but its commercial applicability is still restricted by the costly catalysts required, as well as the need for high temperature and high pressure. Herein, oxygen vacancy-rich defective tungsten oxide (WO) rich in Lewis acid sites was modified by Prussian blue (PB), and the obtained composite reaches up to 94 % styrene carbonate yield (171 mmol gh) at ambient temperature and pressure, exhibiting outstanding advantages in the photocatalytic CO cycloaddition reaction compared with currently reported photocatalysts. It is found that the introduction of PB with photothermal properties significantly enhances the capability of WO to absorb and activate CO and epoxide, along with its light utilization ability.

Phthalocyanine aggregates as semiconductor-like photocatalysts for hypoxic-tumor photodynamic immunotherapy.

Nat Commun

January 2025

Provincial Key Laboratory of Cancer Metastasis Chemoprevention and Chemotherapy, College of Chemistry, Fuzhou University, Fuzhou, China.

Photodynamic immunotherapy (PIT) has emerged as a promising approach for efficient eradication of primary tumors and inhibition of tumor metastasis. However, most of photosensitizers (PSs) for PIT exhibit notable oxygen dependence. Herein, a concept emphasizing on transition from molecular PSs into semiconductor-like photocatalysts is proposed, which converts the PSs from type II photoreaction to efficient type I photoreaction.

We developed a technique allowing the direct observation of photoinduced charge-transfer states (CTSs)-the weakly coupled electron-hole pairs preceding the completely separated charges in organic photovoltaic (OPV) blends. Quadrature detection of the electron spin echo (ESE) signal enables the observation of an out-of-phase ESE signal of CTS. The out-of-phase Electron-Electron Double Resonance (ELDOR) allows measuring electron-hole distance distributions within CTS and its temporal evolution in the microsecond range.
