We formulated and analyzed a class of coupled partial and ordinary differential equation (PDE-ODE) model to study the spread of airborne diseases. Our model describes human populations with patches and the movement of pathogens in the air with linear diffusion. The diffusing pathogens are coupled to the SIR dynamics of each population patch using an integro-differential equation. Susceptible individuals become infected at some rate whenever they are in contact with pathogens (indirect transmission), and the spread of infection in each patch depends on the density of pathogens around the patch. In the limit where the pathogens are diffusing fast, a matched asymptotic analysis is used to reduce the coupled PDE-ODE model into a nonlinear system of ODEs, which is then used to compute the basic reproduction number and final size relation for different scenarios. Numerical simulations of the reduced system of ODEs and the full PDE-ODE model are consistent, and they predict a decrease in the spread of infection as the diffusion rate of pathogens increases. Furthermore, we studied the effect of patch location on the spread of infections for the case of two population patches. Our model predicts higher infections when the patches are closer to each other.

We analyze travelling wave (TW) solutions for nonlinear systems consisting of an ODE coupled to a degenerate PDE with a diffusion coefficient that vanishes as the solution tends to zero and blows up as it approaches its maximum value. Stable TW solutions for such systems have previously been observed numerically as well as in biological experiments on the growth of cellulolytic biofilms. In this work, we provide an analytical justification for these observations and prove existence and stability results for TW solutions of such models.

The health and well-being of a host are deeply influenced by the interactions with its gut microbiota. Contrasted environmental conditions, such as diseases or dietary habits, play a pivotal role in modulating these interactions, impacting microbiota composition and functionality. Such conditions can also lead to transitions from beneficial to detrimental symbiosis, viewed as alternative stable states of the host-microbiota dialogue.

Originating from the pioneering study of Alan Turing, the bifurcation analysis predicting spatial pattern formation from a spatially uniform state for diffusing morphogens or chemical species that interact through nonlinear reactions is a central problem in many chemical and biological systems. From a mathematical viewpoint, one key challenge with this theory for two component systems is that stable spatial patterns can typically only occur from a spatially uniform state when a slowly diffusing 'activator' species reacts with a much faster diffusing 'inhibitor' species. However, from a modelling perspective, this large diffusivity ratio requirement for pattern formation is often unrealistic in biological settings since different molecules tend to diffuse with similar rates in extracellular spaces.

Approximating the fast dynamics of depolarization waves in the human heart described by the monodomain model is numerically challenging. Splitting methods for the PDE-ODE coupling enable the computation with very fine space and time discretizations. Here, we compare different splitting approaches regarding convergence, accuracy, and efficiency.
