Due to the Covid-19 pandemic, labor force is greatly confined by quarantine (social distancing), and limited units of labor and capital are available at the workplace. Millions of employees have lost their jobs and are facing financial hardships. Likewise, capital owners have become illiquid and possibly insolvent within months. This cycle seems to continue for other factors of production as well. Even after lifting quarantines, the global trade might take months (years) to return to its actual potential. Using the GTAP-VA model, the present study simulates the impact of the double-hit scenario of Covid-19 on the global value chains and identifies production losses in different sectors of the world economy.

A Pharmacokinetic Natural Product-Disease-Drug Interaction: A Double Hit of Silymarin and Nonalcoholic Steatohepatitis on Hepatic Transporters in a Rat Model.

J Pharmacol Exp Ther

November 2019

Department of Pharmaceutical Sciences, Washington State University, Spokane, Washington (M.L.M., D.-D.T., T.A., K.D.L., M.F.P., J.D.C.) and Department of Pharmacology, Toxicology and Therapeutics, The University of Kansas Medical Center, Kansas City, Kansas (B.H.)

Patients with nonalcoholic steatohepatitis (NASH) exhibit altered hepatic protein expression of metabolizing enzymes and transporters and altered xenobiotic pharmacokinetics. The botanical natural product silymarin, which has been investigated as a treatment of NASH, contains flavonolignans that inhibit organic anion-transporting polypeptide (OATP) transporter function. The purpose of this study was to assess the individual and combined effects of NASH and silymarin on the disposition of the model OATP substrate pitavastatin.

An update in treating transformed lymphoma.

Best Pract Res Clin Haematol

September 2018

Section of Hematology/Oncology, Department of Medicine, The University of Chicago, USA. Electronic address:

Indolent lymphomas typically have a prolonged course and favorable prognosis. Recent data support survival times that can reach several decades, even if periodic treatment is needed to manage symptoms or stabilize disease. However, all indolent lymphomas have the potential to undergo transformation to an aggressive phenotype, clinically characterized by a rapid progression of adenopathy, new-onset constitutional symptoms, or laboratory abnormalities, and the immediate need for therapeutic intervention.

Recurrent Cytogenetic Abnormalities in Non-Hodgkin's Lymphoma and Chronic Lymphocytic Leukemia.

Methods Mol Biol

January 2018

Department of Pathology, Hong Kong Sanatorium & Hospital, 2 Village Road, Happy Valley, Hong Kong.

Characteristic chromosomal translocations are found to be associated with subtypes of B-cell non-Hodgkin lymphoma (NHL), for example t(8;14)(q24;q32) and Burkitt lymphoma, t(14;18)(q32;q21) and follicular lymphoma, and t(11;14)(q13;q32) in mantle cell lymphoma. Only few recurrent cytogenetic aberrations have been identified in the T-cell NHL and the best known is the ALK gene translocation t(2;5)(p23;q35) in anaplastic large cell lymphoma. Since lymph node or other tissue is seldom submitted for conventional cytogenetics study, alternative approaches for translocation detection are polymerase chain reaction (PCR) or fluorescence in situ hybridization (FISH).

In the last decade, progress made in genetics is questioning the current implicit nosological model in the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, fourth edition, text revision (DSM-IV-TR) and the International Classification of Diseases, tenth revision. Both the categorical nature and the comorbidity detected on applying diagnostic criteria become unsustainable in the light of the genetic architecture that is emerging from studies being conducted on the genetics of mental disorders. The classical paradigms -one gene for one disease- or even a specific distinctive genetic pattern for each condition, are concepts restricted to specific cases.
