Recently there has been a great deal of interest and associated research into aspects of the coordination chemistry of lanthanides and bismuth-elements that show intriguing common features. This work focuses on the synthesis and characterization of a novel bismuth(III) polynuclear metallamacrocyclic complex derived from aminohydroxamic acid, in order to compare the coordination ability of Bi with the similarly sized La ions. A polynuclear tyrosinehydroximate Bi(OH)[15-MC-5](NO) () was obtained according to the synthetic routes previously described for water-soluble Ln(III)-Cu(II) 15-MC-5 metallacrowns. Correlations between structural parameters of Bi(III) and Ln(III) complexes were analyzed. DFT calculations confirmed the similarity between molecular structures of the model bismuth(III) and lanthanum(III) tyrosinehydroximate 15-metallacrowns-5. Analysis of the electronic structures revealed, however, stronger donor-acceptor interactions between the central ion and the metallamacrocycle in the case of the lanthanum analogue. Thermochromic properties of were studied.

In order to investigate the coordination chemistry and pharmacological applications of bismuth compounds, a series of new bismuth(III) halide thiosemicarbazone complexes were synthesized. The reactions of thiophene-2-carbaldehyde-N-substituted thiosemicarbazones with bismuth(III) halides resulted in the formation of the {[[BiCl(η-S-Httsc)].Cl][BiCl(μ-Cl)(η-S-Httsc)]} (1), {[BiCl(η-S-Htmtsc)].

Homo- and Heteroleptic Coordination Polymers and Oxido Clusters of Bismuth(III) Vinylsulfonates.

The synthesis and characterization of six homo- and heteroleptic coordination polymers and oxido clusters of bismuth(III) vinylsulfonates are reported. The solvent-mediated reaction of BiPh and vinylsulfonic acid in ethanol produces [{Ph Bi(O SCH=CH )} ] (1), which crystallizes as a one-dimensional coordination polymer as a result of bridging sulfonato ligands accompanied by intermolecular Bi⋅⋅⋅ π(arene) London dispersion interactions. In solution, compound 1 equilibrates to give [{PhBi(O SCH=CH ) } ] (2) and BiPh .

Eight novel bismuth(III) sulfonato compounds have been synthesized and characterized using the sonochemical reaction of BiO with a range of sulfonic acids, including 2,5-dimethylbenzenesulfonic acid (2,5-DMSH), 2,4-dinitrobenzenesulfonic acid (2,4-DNSH), 2,5-dichlorobenzenesulfonic acid (2,5-DCSH), 1,2-benzenedisulfonic acid (1,2-BDSH), 1,3-benzenedisulfonic acid (1,3-BDSH), 2-sulfobenzoic acid (2-SBH), 3-sulfobenzoic acid (3-SBH), and 2-naphthalenesulfonic acid (NPSH). Six of the complexes (1, 2, 4, and 6-8) were structurally characterized through single-crystal X-ray crystallography. In the presence of the monosulfonic acids 2,5-DMSH, 2,4-DNSH, and 2,5-DCSH, polynuclear bismuth(III) oxido clusters were isolated: namely, [BiO(OH)(2,5-DMS)(HO)]·10HO (1·10HO), [BiO(OH)(2,4-DNS)(HO)]·6HO (2·6HO), and [BiO(OH)(2,5-DCS)(HO)] (3).

Eight bismuth(III) complexes derived from a variety of α-amino acids covering a range of physico-chemical properties (L-phenylalanine (Phe), L-proline (Pro), L-methionine (Met), L-cysteine (Cys), D,L-serine (Ser), L-tyrosine (Tyr), l-aspartic acid (Asp) and L-glutamic acid (Glu)) have been synthesised, characterised, and evaluated for their activity against Helicobacter pylori. The optimal synthetic procedure utilises [Bi(O(t)Bu)3], giving the complexes [BiL3] (L = Phe 1, Pro 2, Met 3, Ser 5, Tyr 6) and [Bi2L3] (L = Cys 4, Asp 7, Glu 8) cleanly and in good yield. However, the synthesis is sensitive to both temperature and moisture.
