Article Abstract
Background: The nucleus tractus solitarius and paratrigeminal nucleus, which are implicated in the processing of airway-derived sensory information, are found in the dorsal medulla. The mechanism and localization of higher-order processing of urge to cough is poorly understood, and much of the existing anatomical localization is limited to animal studies.
Case Description: A 44-year-old Caucasian lady underwent elective foramen magnum decompression for symptomatic Chiari I malformation; postoperatively she had resolution of Chiari symptoms but developed an intractable neurogenic cough. She has no significant medical history or premorbid respiratory issues. Postoperative magnetic resonance imaging of her head demonstrated signal change in the left dorsal medulla, corresponding with the nucleus tractus solitarius and paratrigeminal nucleus.
Conclusions: We suggest that this lesion explains her isolated new cough and localizes the pathway for "urge to cough" to this region of the medulla.

Serotonin (5-HT) is an important neurotransmitter for cognition and neurogenesis in the dentate gyrus (DG), which occurs via movement stimulation such as physical activity. Brain 5-HT function changes secondary to aging require further investigation. We evaluated whether aged animals would present changes in the number of 5-HT neurons in regions such as the dorsal (DRN) and median (MRN) raphe nuclei and possible changes in the rate of cellular activation in the DG in response to acute running, as a reduction in 5-HT neurons could contribute to a decline in neuronal activation in the DG in response to physical activity in aged mice.

Sudden unexplained death in childhood (SUDC) is death of a child ≥ 12 months old that is unexplained after autopsy and detailed analyses. Among SUDC cases, ~ 30% have febrile seizure (FS) history, versus 2-5% in the general population. SUDC cases share features with sudden unexpected death in epilepsy (SUDEP) and sudden infant death syndrome (SIDS), in which brainstem autonomic dysfunction is implicated.

Although breathing is primarily automatic, its modulation by behavior and emotions suggests cortical inputs to brainstem respiratory networks, which hitherto have received little characterization. Here we identify in mice a top-down breathing pathway from dorsal anterior cingulate cortex (dACC) neurons to pontine reticular nucleus GABAergic inhibitory neurons (PnC), which then project to the ventrolateral medulla (VLM). dACC→PnC activity correlates with slow breathing cycles and volitional orofacial behaviors and is influenced by anxiogenic conditions.
