This Letter examines the interplay of important tunneling mechanisms-Fermi level pinning, Marcus inverted transport, and orbital gating-in a molecular rectifier. The temperature dependence of the rectifying molecular junction containing 2,2'-bipyridyl terminated -alkanethiolate was investigated. A bell-shaped trend of activation energy as a function of applied bias evidenced the dominant occurrence of unusual Marcus inverted transport, while retention of rectification at low temperatures implied that the rectification obeyed the resonant tunneling regime. The results allowed reconciling two separately developed transport models, Marcus-Landauer energetics and Fermi level pinning-based rectification. Our work shows that the internal orbital gating can be substituted with the pinning effect, which pushes the transport mechanism into the Marcus inverted regime.

Article Synopsis
  • The rate of triplet state generation in heavy-atom-free organic molecules can be greatly increased (up to 10^10 times) through a process called spin-orbit charge-transfer intersystem crossing (SOCT-ISC), which relies on charge recombination mechanisms.
  • In this study, researchers investigated the behavior of specific organic compounds (arylsubstituted boron-dipyrromethene dyads) using time-resolved spectroscopy to understand how different factors affect the efficiency of triplet state generation.
  • The findings indicate that the energy levels of electron donors and solvent effects play key roles in determining the Gibbs free energy changes during electron transfer processes, which in turn impact the rates of charge recombination and triplet quantum yields

DNA is continuously exposed to a variety of harmful factors, which, on the one hand, can force undesirable processes such as ageing, carcinogenesis and mutagenesis, while on the other hand, can accelerate evolutionary changes. Of all the canonical nucleosides, 2'-deoxyguanosine (dG) exhibits the lowest ionization potential, making it particularly prone to the one-electron oxidizing process. The most abundant type of nucleobase damage is constituted by 7,8-dihydro-8-oxo-2'-deoxyguanosine (dG), with an oxidation potential that is 0.

Article Synopsis
  • Gait speed is an important indicator of mobility and health, but traditional measurement methods can be costly or require assistance, making them impractical for everyday use.
  • This study tested a smartphone app that uses an inertial measurement unit (IMU) to measure gait speed in both young and older adults while walking normally and during cognitive tasks.
  • The results showed that the smartphone's gait speed measurements were valid and reliable when compared to the standard GAITRite mat, suggesting that this method can effectively assess gait speed in real-world settings.

Molecular Triplet Generation Enabled by Adjacent Metal Nanoparticles.

High-efficiency generation of spin-triplet states in organic molecules is of great interest in diverse areas such as photocatalysis, photodynamic therapy, and upconversion photonics. Recent studies have introduced colloidal semiconductor nanocrystals as a new class of photosensitizers that can efficiently transfer their photoexcitation energy to molecular triplets. Here, we demonstrate that metallic Ag nanoparticles can also assist in the generation of molecular triplets in polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), but not through a conventional sensitization mechanism.
