From viruses to nanoparticles, constructs functionalized with multiple ligands display peculiar binding properties that only arise from multivalent effects. Using statistical mechanical modelling, we describe here how multivalency can be exploited to achieve what we dub range selectivity, that is, binding only to targets bearing a number of receptors within a specified range. We use our model to characterise the region in parameter space where one can expect range selective targeting to occur, and provide experimental support for this phenomenon. Overall, range selectivity represents a potential path to increase the targeting selectivity of multivalent constructs.

This study reports on the development of a highly sensitive non-enzymatic electrochemical sensor based on a two-dimensional TiCT/MWCNT-OH nanocomposite for the detection of paraoxon-based pesticide. The synergistic effect between the TiCT nanosheet and the functionalized multi-walled carbon nanotubes enhanced the sensor's conductivity and catalytic activity. The nanocomposite demonstrates superior electrochemical and electroanalytical performance compared to the pristine TiCT and MWCNT-OH in detecting paraoxon-ethyl in fruit samples (green and red grapes), with a linear response range from 0.

Importance: Spontaneous reports have indicated that montelukast increases the risk of neuropsychiatric adverse events, and the US Food and Drug Administration added a boxed warning about these risks in 2020. However, the potential mechanism is not well understood, and the observational evidence is scarce, particularly in children.

Objective: To assess the potential association between the use of montelukast and the risk of neuropsychiatric adverse events in children and adolescents.

Here, we developed a novel, cost-effective fluorescence light-up biosensor for Pb detection based on a label-free G-quadruplex combined with modified thioflavin T (ThT) derivatives. Among the various G-quadruplex sequences tested, only T2 exhibited fluorescence light-up properties upon interacting with the modified ThT derivatives in the presence of Pb. To enhance the Pb sensing system, we also compared modified ThT derivatives, including the newly synthesized propyl-substituted ThT (ThT-P) and butyl-substituted ThT (ThT-B).

Purposeful movement often requires selection of a particular action from a range of alternatives, but how does the brain represent potential actions so that they can be compared for selection, and how are motor commands generated if movement is initiated before the final goal is identified? According to one hypothesis, the brain averages partially prepared motor plans to generate movement when there is goal uncertainty. This is consistent with the idea that motor decision-making unfolds through competition between internal representations of alternative actions. An alternative hypothesis holds that only one movement, which is optimized for task performance, is prepared for execution at any time.

Polymeric nano-discs offer a promising and adaptable nanocarrier platform for topical applications involving the targeted administration of drugs. These biocompatible polymer-based, disc-shaped, nanoscale structures have drawn interest due to their exceptional capacity to encapsulate a diverse range of theranostics. Theranostics, the concept of combining treatments and diagnostics into a single system, is the core of attraction.
