The Prevalence, Aetiology and Healing Trajectories of Hard-To-Heal Wounds in South Africa.

Int Wound J

March 2025

Experimental Medicine Research Group, Department of Medicine, Faculty of Medicine & Health Sciences, Stellenbosch University, Cape Town, South Africa.

The incidence of hard-to-heal wounds is rising globally with adverse effects on quality of life. Yet, there is no reliable data available on hard-to-heal wound prevalence, aetiology, and outcomes in a low-to-middle income country without improper care being a confounding factor. In this retrospective study of 460 individuals (876 wounds) that received appropriate standard of care at a specialised wound care clinic in the Kwazulu-Natal province of South Africa, acute/traumatic wounds were most prevalent (230/460, 50%) followed by ulcers (173/460, 38%) (DFUs 13%, VLUs 12%, PIs 11%, MLUs < 1%, ALUs < 1%) and atypical wounds (55/460, 12%) (atypical wounds 8%, vectors 4%).

A rare and potentially fatal consequence of trauma is diaphragmatic rupture. Since severe concomitant injuries to other organs might obscure the signs and symptoms of acute diaphragmatic trauma, a high index of suspicion is necessary for clinical diagnosis, particularly in the absence of pathognomonic radiographic findings. Many clinical signs may appear years later in chronic situations.

Purpose: Brexpiprazole, when administered with antidepressant therapy, may provide additional benefits due to complementary actions on noradrenaline (norepinephrine), serotonin, and dopamine neurotransmitter systems. This review addressed the question: what information can preclinical studies provide on the use of brexpiprazole + antidepressant treatment?

Methods: A systematic literature review was conducted to search for preclinical studies of brexpiprazole + antidepressant therapy that included a behavioral test relating to any psychiatric disorder. Ovid MEDLINE, Ovid Embase, and conference abstracts were searched (January 1, 2011-July 5, 2021).

Non-Traumatic Thyroid Cartilage Fracture from Sudden Neck Motion: Clinical Insights.

Am J Case Rep

March 2025

Department of Otolaryngology and Head and Neck Surgery, Shaare-Zedek Medical Center, Faculty of Medicine, Hebrew University of Jerusalem, Jerusalem, Israel.

BACKGROUND The thyroid cartilage is the most prominent laryngeal cartilage located beneath the hyoid bone. Non-traumatic fractures of the larynx, including the thyroid cartilage, are rare and can occur when the glottis is closed and intrathoracic pressure suddenly increases. This report describes the case of a 42-year-old man presenting with hoarseness and pain when swallowing and a diagnosis of non-traumatic thyroid cartilage fracture following sudden neck movement, highlighting the importance of recognizing atypical mechanisms of laryngeal injury.

Objective: The primary aim of this study was to compare the surgical invasiveness of internal fixation for pathological fractures caused by metastatic bone tumors with that for traumatic fractures. The secondary aim was to identify factors contributing to the complexity of surgeries for metastatic bone disease and provide insights for improving surgical strategies by analyzing operative time and blood loss.

Methods: Patients undergoing internal fixation for femoral fractures at 10 institutions between January 2021 and December 2023 were included.
