Membrane modification is becoming ever more relevant for mitigating fouling phenomena within wastewater treatment applications. Past research included a novel low-fouling coating using polymerizable bicontinuous microemulsion (PBM) induced by UV-LED polymerization. This additional cover layer deteriorated the filtration capacity significantly, potentially due to the observed high pore intrusion of the liquid PBM prior to the casting process. Therefore, this work addressed an innovative experimental protocol for controlling the viscosity of polymerizable bicontinuous microemulsions (PBM) before casting on commercial ultrafiltration (UF) membranes. Prior to the coating procedure, the PBM viscosity modulation was carried out by controlled radical polymerization (CRP). The regulation was conducted by introducing the radical inhibitor 2,2,6,6-tetramethylpiperidine 1-oxyl after a certain time (CRP time). The ensuing controlled radical polymerized PBM (CRP-PBM) showed a higher viscosity than the original unpolymerized PBM, as confirmed by rheological measurements. Nevertheless, the resulting CRP-PBM-cast membranes had a lower permeability in water filtration experiments despite a higher viscosity and potentially lower pore intrusion. This result is due to different polymeric structures of the differently polymerized PBM, as confirmed by solid-state nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) investigations. The findings can be useful for future developments in the membrane science field for production of specific membrane-coating layers for diverse applications.

Surface proton hopping conduction (SPHC) mechanisms is an important proton conduction mechanism in conventional polymer electrolytes, along with the Grotthuss and vehicle mechanisms. Due to the small diffusion coefficient of protons in the SPHC mechanism, few studies have focused on the SPHC mechanism. Recently, it has been found that a dense alignment of SO groups significantly lowers the activation energy in the SPHC mechanism, enabling fast proton conduction.

The low-fouling propensity of commercially available polyethersulfone (PES) membranes was studied after modification of the membrane surface via coating with polymerizable bicontinuous microemulsion (PBM) materials. The PBM coating was polymerized within 1 min using ultraviolet (UV) light exposure. It was detected on the PES membrane surface via attenuated total reflectance-Fourier transform infrared (ATR-FTIR) spectroscopy.

Hypothesis: Surfactant-free microemulsions (SFMEs) were recently reported to be an interesting medium for free-radical polymerizations. The aim of this study is to investigate the link between the morphology of PMMA monopolymers as well as PMMA-PHEMA-copolymers with the expected nature of the SFME before polymerization. A surfactant-based microemulsion with nonionic surfactants was investigated as a reference system.

A simple direct-mixing method was proposed to use a union of silica particles and amino-capped silicone oil (diNH-PDMS) as stabilizers to form bicontinuous emulsion gels (bijels) in wide mixing proportions of silica particle/diNH-PDMS and oil/water with a tunable channel size of the spatial continuity, which was verified by the three-dimensional reconstruction viewer and curvature analysis. By direct polymerization of the oil phase as a template, solid materials were obtained with interconnected structures.

Soft materials with self-assembled networks possess saddle-shaped interfaces with distributed negative Gaussian curvatures. The ability to stabilize such a geometry is critically important for various applications but can be challenging due to the possibly "deficient" packing of the building blocks. This nontrivial challenge has been manifested, for example, by the limited availability of cross-linkable bicontinuous cubic (Q) liquid crystals (LCs), which can be utilized to fabricate compelling polymers with networked nanochannels uniformly sized at ∼1 nm.
