A heterostructured photoluminescence 'turn-off' film was developed using vertically oriented LYH:Eu nanosheets as a partial sacrificial layer for isolated YVO:Eu nanophosphor layers and was used for the convenient detection and removal of Cu ions with excellent sensitivity and recyclability.
