Synkinesis is a distressing sequela of peripheral facial palsy (PFP). This study aimed to translate and validate the Synkinesis Assessment Questionnaire (SAQ), a reliable patient-reported outcome evaluation tool for synkinesis, in French. The SAQ was translated following a standard forward-backward translation procedure. After a cognitive debriefing with 10 PFP patients, the SAQ-F was assessed amongst 50 patients for internal consistency, known-group validity, construct validity, criterion validity, and test-retest reliability. Results demonstrated that the SAQ-F was valid, reliable, and had a unidimensional structure. The SAQ-F should be accompanied by clinician-based scales, to provide valuable additional information on the severity of synkinesis.

Importance: Facial synkinesis refers to pathologic cocontraction and baseline hypertonicity of muscles innervated by the facial nerve, commonly attributed to the aberrant regeneration of nerve fibers following injury. The pathomechanism and optimal treatment of facial synkinesis remain unclear. The goal of this review is to highlight current understanding of the epidemiology, pathophysiology, clinical presentation, assessment, and treatment of facial synkinesis.

November 2024

Department of Neurosurgery, Shanghai Xinhua Hospital, Shanghai Jiao Tong University of Medicine, Shanghai, China; The Cranial Nerve Disease Center of Shanghai Jiao Tong University, Shanghai, China. Electronic address:

Background: This study aimed to investigate the risk factors affecting epineurectomy of the facial nerve trunk for facial synkinesis and use them to establish a prediction model to assess the recurrence of post-operative facial synkinesis.

Methods: A total of 68 patients with synkinesis after facial paralysis were enrolled in this study. They were randomized to the training and testing sets.

Article Synopsis
  • Facial palsy (FP) leads to facial paralysis, impairments, and affects appearance, which can impact quality of life and mental health due to issues like social isolation.
  • A review of 16 studies from 2010 to 2023 found that botulinum toxin injections are effective in improving facial symmetry and aesthetics for long-term FP management, with benefits lasting around 4 months.
  • Although botulinum shows promise for treating FP, especially for long-term effects, more research is needed for its use in acute cases to establish guidelines for timing, dosage, and treatment intervals.

NPSY.Lab-VR, Department of Human Sciences, University of Verona, Italy; IRCSS Sacro Cuore Don Calabria, Negrar, Verona, Italy.

Article Synopsis
  • Research examined three patients with different types of brain damage over 7 months, focusing on the core symptoms and underlying brain structures related to the syndrome.
  • The study found no common areas of grey matter damage among the patients, but identified similar patterns of white matter disconnections affecting communication between brain hemispheres and other areas involved in motor control.

Department of Otolaryngology-Head and Neck Surgery, Division of Facial Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery, Vanderbilt University Medical Center, Nashville, Tennessee, USA.

Objective: Synkinesis is estimated to impact 10% to 50% of those with facial palsy. We aim to identify the incidence and factors associated with anxiety and depression in the facial synkinesis population.

Study Design: Prospective cohort study.
