Potential of the Complex to Produce 4-Hydroxy-3-Methyl-2-Alkyquinolines.

Front Cell Infect Microbiol

November 2019

Institut Armand Frappier, Institut National de la Recherche Scientifique, Laval, QC, Canada.

A few species, especially , and , are known to produce and release various 4-hydroxy-3-methyl-2-alkylquinolines (HMAQs), a family of molecules analogous to the 4-hydroxy-2-alkylquinolines [aka 2-n-alkyl-4(1)-quinolones] of , which include the quinolone signal (PQS). However, while these exoproducts play several roles in virulence and survival, the available literature is very limited on their distribution and function in . In this perspective article, we studied the distribution of the operon, which encodes the enzymes involved in the biosynthesis of HMAQs, in the complex (Bcc) group.

Using circular dichroism spectroscopy, we show evidence of unusual folding behaviour for several designed peptides in neat ionic liquid. Helical peptides, AKA(2) and Trp-cage, exhibit heat-induced folding, with stable helical structure persisting to 96 °C, whereas the β-hairpin Trpzip4 is destabilized by the neat [C(4)mpy][Tf(2)N].

Characterization of the molecular interactions that stabilize the folded state of proteins including hydrogen bond formation, solvation, molecular crowding, and interaction with membrane environments is a fundamental goal of theoretical biophysics. Inspired by recent experimental studies by Gai and co-workers, we have used molecular dynamics simulations to explore the structure and dynamics of the alanine-rich AKA(2) peptide in bulk solution and in a reverse micelle environment. The simulated structure of the reverse micelle shows substantial deviations from a spherical geometry.

Techniques for colorectal anastomosis.

World J Gastroenterol

April 2010

Discipline of Surgery, School of Medicine, James Cook University, Clinical School 1MB52, Angus Smith Dr, Douglas, Townsville, QLD 4811, Australia.

Colorectal anastomotic leak remains one of the most feared post-operative complications, particularly after anterior resection of the rectum with, the shift from abdomino-peritoneal resections to total mesorectal excision and primary anastomosis. The literature fails to demonstrate superiority of stapled over hand-sewn techniques in colorectal anastomosis, regardless of the level of anastomosis, although a high stricture rate was noted in the former technique. Thus, improvements in safety aspects of anastomosis and alternatives to hand-sewn and stapled techniques are being sought.

A retrospective analysis of direct results of anterior resections of the rectum fulfilled for cancer is presented. The patients were divided into 3 groups according to the methods of forming colorectal anastomoses: manual nodular, compression-mechanical method using apparatus AKA-2, 4 and a compressive method with apparatuses on the basis of the effect of memory of the form in the titanium nikelide alloy. Advantages of using compressive apparatuses are shown as well as the reliability of compressive colorectal anastomoses.
