Objectives: To explore the health research capacity (HRC) and factors associated with professional and technical personnel (PTP) in a first-class tertiary hospital in northwest China.

Methods: We collected the repeated measurement data from a first-class tertiary hospital in northwest China between 2013 and 2017. HRC of PTP was assessed by a comprehensive evaluation system and measured by research capacity score (RCS). The participants were divided into research group (RCS >0) and comparison group (RCS = 0); participants of the comparison group were selected by two-stage stratified random sampling. Multilevel model for repeated measures was used to investigate the potential factors associated with HRC.

Results: A total of 924 PTP were included (308 in the research group and 616 in the comparison group). This study found consistent growth in RCS and associated 95% CIs for the hospital during 2013 and 2017. The linear multilevel model showed PTP with a doctorate degree had higher RCS than those with a master's degree (β, 1.74; P <0.001), bachelor's degree (β, 2.02; P <0.001) and others without a degree (β, 2.32; P <0.001). Furthermore, the PTP with intermediate (β, 0.13; P = 0.015), vice-high (β, 0.27; P = 0.001) and senior (β, 0.63; P <0.001) professional titles had higher RCS than those with junior positions. Compared with PTP in the administration, those in paediatrics had higher RCS (β, 0.28; P = 0.047) though similar to PTP in other departments. PTP with an administrative position had a higher RCS than those in non-administrative positions (β, 0.26; P <0.001). The RCS increased with the research fund (β, 0.15; P <0.001). However, no associations were found between RCS and sex, age, ethnic, graduate school or technical type.

Conclusions: HRC with associated variation of PTP for the hospital in northwest China increasingly improved and degree, professional title, administrative position, and research fund were related to HRC of PTP. Multi-central prospective studies are needed to clarify the potential relationship of related factors and HRC of PTP.

Aim: To measure the relationships between dyadic coping, marital adjustment, and post-traumatic growth in patients with maintenance hemodialysis and their spouses.

Background: Post-traumatic growth is common in patients facing maintenance hemodialysis. However, studies tend to focus on these patients as individuals rather than as part of a couple.

Article Synopsis
  • - The study aimed to assess the effects of wrist-ankle acupuncture on reducing postoperative nausea and vomiting in female orthopedic surgery patients through a randomized control trial.
  • - Female patients were divided into an experimental group, which received acupuncture point stimulation, and a control group, which received standard care, with both groups monitored for various health indicators and patient satisfaction.
  • - Results showed that the experimental group had lower serum levels of nausea-related hormones and higher patient satisfaction compared to the control group, suggesting that acupuncture can be an effective nursing intervention without compromising pain relief.

Background: This 7-year longitudinal survey (2017-2023) assessed the point prevalence of hospital-acquired infections (HAIs) and community-acquired infections (CAIs) at a first-class tertiary hospital in China, both prior to and during the Corona Virus Disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic.

Methods: Patients were stratified into prepandemic and pandemic periods, as well as into stringent and relaxed infection prevention and control (IPC) phases, to compare the point prevalence of HAIs and CAIs.

Results: The overall point prevalence of HAIs was 1.

Background: Healthcare organizations are under pressure to improve services because of an aging population and increasing healthcare demands. Lean healthcare management focuses on improving service quality and efficiency under the condition of limited resources, but it may overlook patients' emotional needs and experiences, especially in developing countries. This study advocates integrating medical humanities with lean healthcare to develop a patient-centered service model.

Article Synopsis
  • - This study addresses the complexity of diagnosing pituitary adenomas by creating a detailed annotated dataset (TCPA) from clinical notes, which includes 2000 documents and over half a million words filled with diagnosis and treatment information.
  • - The corpus construction employed a semi-automatic approach, achieving high-quality annotations with a strong inter-annotator agreement, highlighting the dataset's reliability for research purposes.
  • - Experiments with large language models (LLMs) demonstrated that TCPA can automatically extract clinical information from unstructured text and effectively reduce the amount of training data needed, saving labor costs in medical research.
