'Let there be light' or life in the dark? Vital geographies of mental healthcare.

Soc Sci Med

September 2023

University of Glasgow, School of Geographical and Earth Sciences, Glasgow, Lanarkshire, G12 8QQ, UK. Electronic address:

This paper explores the relations between light and dark/white and black disclosed in a study of Gartnavel Royal Hospital in Glasgow, Scotland, where an old Victorian lunatic asylum remains, if becoming ruined, on the same site as a modern mental healthcare campus. In-depth interview work recovering the 'spatial stories' of patients and staff, past and present, reveals a complex mixture of positive and negative memories and interpretations prompted by both the 'darkened spaces' of Old Gartnavel and the liveliness associated with both sets of spaces. These findings are framed by (a) a reading of Badiou's short monograph on Black (Badiou, 2017) and (b) an engagement with light and dark studies, both of which suggest a rebalancing of the normal valuations whereby dark/black is cast as the realm of death, everything that deadens and threatens life, whereas light/white is cast as that of life, liveliness and vitality.

Department of Psychosomatics and Psychiatry, University Children's Hospital, University of Zurich, Zurich, Switzerland.

Article Synopsis
  • - Osteogenesis imperfecta (OI) is a rare genetic disorder that weakens bones, resulting in a range of severity from mild to severe, impacting daily life significantly.
  • - A meta-analysis evaluated the quality of life (QoL) in children and adults with OI, revealing that children scored lower on various quality of life measures, while adults showed reduced QoL across all physical and mental health components compared to general norms.
  • - The findings highlight that those with OI experience substantial challenges in both physical and mental health, emphasizing the need for further research to understand the specific impacts on different OI subtypes.

Clinical Potential of Dental Pulp Stem Cells in Pulp Regeneration: Current Endodontic Progress and Future Perspectives.

Front Cell Dev Biol

April 2022

Department of Pharmacology, School of Dentistry, Graduate School, Institute of Oral Biology, Kyung Hee University, Seoul, South Korea.

Dental caries is a common disease that not only destroys the rigid structure of the teeth but also causes pulp necrosis in severe cases. Once pulp necrosis has occurred, the most common treatment is to remove the damaged pulp tissue, leading to a loss of tooth vitality and increased tooth fragility. Dental pulp stem cells (DPSCs) isolated from pulp tissue exhibit mesenchymal stem cell-like characteristics and are considered ideal candidates for regenerating damaged dental pulp tissue owing to their multipotency, high proliferation rate, and viability after cryopreservation.

Background: Fragility fractures without significant trauma of the pelvic ring in older patients were often treated conservatively. An alternative treatment is surgery involving percutaneous screw fixation to stabilize the posterior pelvic ring. This surgical treatment enables patients to be mobilized quickly and complications associated with bedrest and temporary immobility are reduced.

A gerophysiology perspective on healthy ageing.

Ageing Res Rev

January 2022

RESTORE Research Center, University of Toulouse, INSERM 1301, CNRS 5070, EFS, ENVT, Toulouse, France. Electronic address:

Improvements in public health and health care have resulted in significant increases in lifespan globally, but also in a significant increase in chronic disease prevalence. This has led to a focus on healthy ageing bringing a shift from a pathology-centered to an intrinsic capacity and function-centered view. In parallel, the emerging field of geroscience has promoted the exploration of the biomolecular drivers of ageing towards a transverse vision by proposing an integrated set of molecular hallmarks.
