The current WHO histopathologic criteria for oral epithelial dysplasia (ED) are based on architectural and cytologic alterations, and do not address other histopathologic features of ED. Here we propose new diagnostic criteria including architectural, organizational, and cytologic features for oral ED. Cases of unifocal leukoplakia (UL) and proliferative leukoplakia (PL) with clinical photographs and follow-up information were identified. Only cases that showed minimal cytologic atypia or mild ED were used to demonstrate critical architectural changes as defined in this study. Eight biopsies from eight UL patients and 34 biopsies from four PL patients were included. The biopsies showed (a) corrugated, verrucous or papillary architecture, (b) hyperkeratosis with epithelial atrophy, (c) bulky squamous epithelial proliferation, and (d) demarcated hyperkeratosis and "skip" segments. The architectural alterations defined here are as important as the currently used criteria for the diagnosis of ED. Clinicopathologic correlation when diagnosing oral ED is also of the utmost importance in accurate diagnosis.

Galamsey is a Ghanaian jargon from the phrase "gather and sell," coined from how gold was mined with simple tools by natives and sold afterwards. Despite its socio-economic benefits, a significant upsurge in galamsey has been widely associated with significant environmental impacts viz, destruction of aquatic ecosystems and ecosystems services. This paper discuses impacts of galamsey on aquatic ecosystems and ecosystem services using the Driver-Pressure-State-Impact-Response framework in combination with the quantitative defensible impact characterization approach to establish the cause-and-impact relationships between pollutants associated with galamsey, the extent to which aquatic ecosystems and ecosystem services are impacted while answering the questions what is happening to the environment and why it is happening (compilation and analysis of status and trends of key environmental indicators) and what the consequences are for the environment (analysis of impacts of environmental change on ecosystem services).

Cheonsu Bay experienced a reduction in water area to half of its original size due to the completion of dikes and related reclamation projects. Exposure to vanadium (V) occurs through the ingestion of contaminated water, polluted soil, V-containing foods and medications, and the toxicity and absorption during the small intestine phase after oral ingestion play crucial roles in the ultimate health hazards posed by V. In this study, the human colon adenocarcinoma (Caco-2) cells were selected as an intestinal absorption model to investigate the uptake and cytotoxicity of vanadyl sulfate (VOSO) and sodium orthovanadate (NaVO). Our results confirmed the cytotoxic effects of V(IV) and V(V) and revealed a greater toxicity of V(IV) than V(V) towards Caco-2 cells.
