Conducting or semiconducting materials embedded in insulating polymeric substrates can be useful in biointerface applications; however, attainment of this composite configuration by direct chemical processes is challenging. Laser-assisted synthesis has evolved as a fast and inexpensive technique to prepare various materials, but its utility in the construction of biophysical tools or biomedical devices is less explored. Here, we use laser writing to convert portions of polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) into nitrogen-doped cubic silicon carbide (3C-SiC). The dense 3C-SiC surface layer is connected to the PDMS matrix via a spongy graphite layer, facilitating electrochemical and photoelectrochemical activity. We demonstrate the fabrication of arbitrary two-dimensional (2D) SiC-based patterns in PDMS and freestanding 3D constructs. To establish the functionality of the laser-produced composite, we apply it as flexible electrodes for pacing isolated hearts and as photoelectrodes for local peroxide delivery to smooth muscle sheets.

In the growing field of personalized medicine, non-invasive wearable devices and sensors are valuable diagnostic tools for the real-time monitoring of physiological and biokinetic signals. Among all the possible multiple (bio)-entities, pH is important in defining health-related biological information, since its variations or alterations can be considered the cause or the effect of disease and disfunction within a biological system. In this work, an innovative (bio)-electrochemical flexible pH sensor was proposed by realizing three electrodes (working, reference, and counter) directly on a polyimide (Kapton) sheet through the implementation of CO laser writing, which locally converts the polymeric sheet into a laser-induced graphene material (LIG electrodes), preserving inherent mechanical flexibility of Kapton.

This study aims to compare the effects of conventional surgical techniques and laser-assisted methods on salivary oxidative stress biomarkers following third molar extraction, in order to evaluate the potential benefits of laser surgery in reducing oxidative stress and promoting faster recovery. A total of 154 patients, aged 16-30, undergoing third molar extractions were included in the study. We updated all sections by collecting documents published since the publication of the first edition.

Tightly confined plasmons in metal nanogaps are highly sensitive to surface inhomogeneities and defects due to the nanoscale optical confinement, but tracking and monitoring their location is hard. Here, we probe a 1-D extended nanocavity using a plasmonic silver nanowire (AgNW) on mirror geometry. Morphological changes inside the nanocavity are induced locally using optical excitation and probed locally through simultaneous measurements of surface enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) and dark-field spectroscopy.
